With our reviews mounting up we were considering putting on the brakes for a short while, but such was the extent of our enjoyment, courtesy of one man, at the last two Beyond’s, we simply couldn’t resist reporting on it. So, as is now traditional, we give you our bite sized reflection, in advance of yet another full-on review of Beyond, but with a difference……
It is no secret that Beyond has become our most favourite club of all time and in its current incarnation at Area, has blown us away by its brilliance on a number of occasions, not least with the depth of D.J. talent it attracts. When you consider names like Jamie Head, Mikey D, D’Johnny, Fat Tony, Gonzalo Rivas, The Sharp Boys, Hifi Sean, Paul Christian and a myriad of other guests (think Paul Heron, Severino, Pagano), as well as the sadly missed Alan K and this would be more than enough for any other club or clubber. But, without question, Beyond for us belongs to just one man, a talent who has been waving his magical musical wand over us since the days of Crash, huh hum years ago and who sent us away to South Africa smiling & contented with a scorching set at “Erotica” on 20th Feb. So a month later & back in London and Beyond in his hands proved not just heavenly but emotionally charged too, his electric & enthralling set sending us into tears of joy more than once, his constant reassuring peeps over the D.J. booth in our direction making it all the more special. But as good, no great, as his set at “Muscle” was, even better was to come at “Black”, he reassuming his rightful slot of 9 am and blowing us away with the best set we had witnessed since “Tokyo” last October, 2 hours packed with hits from his amazing “Afterhours 2011” podcast, sending us into “Doing The Disco Matt” overdrive. But the pinnacle of this prolific performance was when we were honoured with an invite behind the D.J. booth with the man, watching him weave his musical magic while we danced right next to him, truly awesome. Such is the magnitude of the man, we simply had to devote a special review to him and it could be no-one else but the superb Steve Pitron, so with much more to say, its “…ready, steady, go for this special review…” (DISCO MATT)
