Back from our health woes wilderness, we are playing catch-up as we turn out our take on the April P.R. for the superb summer smash of a spectacle, Summer Rites In The Park taking post London Gay Pride March spotlight, as it puts on a party of prolific proportions, we posting our interpretation of initial info,  followed by the event PR itself.

It was a hot sunny summer Saturday when, as a twenty something, we headed to Brockwell Park in Brixton with our then close clubbing companion Chris, partying in the park, in hindsight, at its heights, the new “Summer Rites” festival a welcome addition to the annual Gay Pride park parties, Yet for this  particular year, Pride official decided a change was as good as a rest, switching their outdoor post march meet to Clapham Common, thus leaving the door open for Summer Rites to stand in the amazing  the amazing amphitheatre setting of a spot that is Brockwell Park, in our view, still the best location for these sorts of parties, anywhere in London. Plus, this was a tremendous time in clubland history, as it saw a host of brilliant brands come together for one massive mash-up under the sun, the likes of Crash, Trade, Heaven & G.A.Y., usually direct competitors, joining forces to create something quite special and it was, our fantastic time we has, especially the lido which was hosted by Warriors will remain etched on our memories forever.

Yet as successful the first festival was, the following three were both plagued by inclement weather & seemed to have lost the magic and the year 2000, with trends changing, signalled what then seemed to be the last. However, like a handful of brilliant brands whose names & reputation has stood the test of time (Crash & Trade come to mind), Summer Rites had both the reputation & the name, so when it stormed back onto the scene ten years later, this time at Shoreditch Park, the interest was immense, although just like its first four outings, the popularity of both the 2011 & the 2012 festivals tailed off, yet again the weather having a hand on popularity proceedings. But with the team having selected London Gay Pride Day (Sat 29th June) for this year’s event, steering away from September, not only should there should be a bigger chance of the sun shining but  the captive audience will be considerably larger too, despite the main thrust of Pride taking place in central London.

So, that’s our initial take on this turn, now for the press release info……

Summer Rites Pride in the Park 2013 – 29th June 2013, 2pm till 11pm –

Shoreditch Park, New North Road, London,  N1 6TA

The first Summer Rites festival stormed the London scene in ‘96 and its refreshing mix of neighbourhood charm, slick production values and musical credibility remain at the core of the event’s popularity to this day. Summer Rites hosted the initial al fresco parties in Kennington, then Brockwell Park and attracted a fashionable mix of both clubbers and live music fans. In addition to sets from the UK’s finest DJs, legendary performances came from Marc Almond, Republica, Holly Johnson, Jimmy Somerville, Siouxsie Sioux and Rupert Everett. In 2010, after a ten year sabbatical, Summer Rites staged a sensational return in Shoreditch Park. Much like David Bowie, Wayne Shires and his team proved it’s still possible to bounce back as cutting edge and popular as before. Last year’s event saw Boy George, Mutya, Amanda Lepore and Cazwell delivering blistering live performances whileLondon’s hottest club brands whipped the disco tents into a grateful frenzy.

This year, the city’s favourite festival has joined forces with London LGBT + Community Pride to create ‘Summer Rites Pride in the Park 2013’. This exciting partnership will deliver the professional expertise of Summer Rites, professionally combined with the commercial broad palette of a national celebration. The theme of this year’s Pride is Love (and Marriage) and this unique event highlights the benefits of a union that delivering a party everyone will wants to attend. Summer Rites Pride in the Park 2013 will host a crowd-pleasing cocktail of the UK’s best clubs including; Bear Necessity’s, Tranny Shack, East Bloc, Queer Nation and Love Child, with many more to be announced.

About discomatt

The History........................................................Created in 2008 after a short period of blogging under his real name, the pseudonym, “Disco Matt”, was born on the back of a reputation for being London’s original party boy having partied and clubbed across the London gay scene since in mid 1990’s.........................................................Through his series of blogs via individual blogging pages which soon morphed into a full blown website (http://discomatt.com), Disco Matt established himself as an independent journalist come columnist who quickly gained a reputation for supporting & promoting one of the world’s most prolific clubbing scenes. He previewed, reviewed & recommended London gay clubs, as well as the diverse gay/metrosexual London club/bar culture, linking to & reviewing the scene top D.J.’s and generally covering the gay scene including international gay events....................................................Regularly reporting on the top events across the scene, Disco Matt’s reviews, over the years, developed a strong following, not just by clubbers, D.J’s, promoters, music producers & scene faces, but people far and wide that were looking for an insight to the incredible scene that was London. He also previewed upcoming events that signalled, either a major change or update of existing clubs, new ventures on the gAylist/metrosexual scene, or where he considered events that deserved more comprehensive coverage to that provided in other posts.............................................However, having pretty much reached the top of his game in his chosen specific field, due to a number of personal predicaments, challenges & changes in his life priorities, Disco Matt parked his writing and operation in February 2014. While the burning desire to continue remained, what this much needed period of inactivity did provide was the time & space to re-think & re-focus his activities on a broader spectrum of media and entertainment............................................................So, following this long two year lay-off, he built up the foundations for this diversification into the areas of film, theatre, radio & television where his reviewing, recommending & reporting was to be replicated & resurrected, also pointing his promotions through more visuals & video's linked to all these areas along with his core activities and passions ................................................................................The Present....................................After another (shorter) period of lay-off from mid 2016, a life changing event reignited his passion and early into 2017, Disco Matt has delivered on his promise for a new, more modern look to his website, shedding the old & tired skin in favour of something far more in keeping with the times and with his blogging roots. And he has waived a fond farewell to his clubbing days, this having also been ditched from his site & activity, rather now just focussing on the genres of film, theatre, radio, television, video and of course, music, in so doing, aiming to broaden his appeal to a much wider audience interested in the latest most cutting edge areas of media & entertainment.............................................................................His aim is to be highly regarded across the industry for his writing in these fields and ultimately become a full time critic in film &/or theatre.
