Summer Season Synopsis

It has certainly been an eventful summer in Disco Matt land, it starting pretty precariously following our hospitalisation in June, which pretty much sidelined lots of plans for that month, while July saw a hectic month of events ranging from London’s Gay Pride, to Summer Rites, Lovebox & even a boat party with the Later crew. So, such was the pace of activity, as many in August took to the beaches of Brighton & Barcelona for the formers Pride event & the latter’s Circuit Festival, we stepped into our own summer siesta, sitting out the scene for three weeks. But making our slow but surefooted return just in time for the Bank Holiday, this has also signalled a return to normal review, recommending & reporting services  which is kick started with our look back across the summer in what is more like a bi-monthly newsletter. So, picking out some highlights that will make up our “Summer Season Synopsis”, we will also point into September and what to expect from our family of website features.

So, section by section, let’s run down what we have been up to over the summer, picking on highlight posts and then pointing towards upcoming activity.

Revolution Renegade

REVIEWS – This was perhaps the one & only area that kept up a full head of steam during July & August, our “Preview The Review” format having been ditched in favour of a return to our original reflection reporting, but with a “Bite Size”, “Full Size” and now “Super Size” twist to it, also complimenting our “Nibble Size” live review tweets that have attracted increasing attention over the summer. Having been pretty much tame & towing the line with our recent reviews, the employment of a “Secret Squirrel” undercover reviewer to fill our boots was met with callous criticism, so September will see us reassuming our review reigns in totality, also returning to our more controversial yet truthful account of events.

PREVIEWS – This remained very much an underutilised section of our website in July & August, perhaps a reflection of both the lack of exciting enough activity to prelude, although with what was billed as the club launch of 2011, Brava did get full preview coverage, the sole benefactor however. So, we are hopeful September will sprout new scene seeds, Soho Pink Sunday a likely contender for our preview posting.

The Boy Is Back

RECOMMENDS – With our minds in somewhat of a muddle over which direction to take our weekly “Best Bites & Short Shouts” newsletters, the issue of these took a dive, our experimental “Bar Bites & Club Cuts” hardly getting off the ground. Mind you, there were a good handful of Weekend Focus & Extra Bites posts to keep the wolves from our doors and September starts with gusto, our first on SuperMartXe already out & more to come this week alone, our newsletter in original format also back with a bang.

REPORTS – Like our summer siesta, this section effectively took a break too, just two reports of any consequence to write home about. But with our “That Was The Week That Was” feature making a welcome return from next week, plus with more scene snippets making publication here, September should see a return to the reporting levels enjoyed in June.

MUSIC – Having devoted just two focuses during July & August, plus only one newsletter, we have done the amazing work of our scene D.J.’s a little injustice, so with an autumn spring in our step, September will see a return to the weekly focus features you (& we) have been missing, plus a newsletter each month, the nest in the making and due out later this week.

COMING UP – Apart from out indicated activity above, September should see plenty of archive D.J. biog’s loaded to our site, while we will re-start our special features series with a look at Javier Medina. As far as “Disco Matters” is concerned, Brava will get our attention, question responses from the promotions team awaited and we hope to devote time to the launch of our new “Lists” section, while our long overdue cultural reviews of Antwerp, Berlin & Cape Town have been shelved for the time being, while we devote our energies to getting our other sections back on their feet.

Nibble Size Review Tweets

KEEP UP – With our “Nibble Size” review tweets one of the best ways to track our activity out on the scene, our live postings available to tune into at your will, Twitter is a great way to keep up with our other posts too, which you can follow at http://twitter.com/discomatt. Twitter aside, we also use Facebook as a major broadcast medium, so why not check our walls via our page at http://facebook.com/pages/Disco-Matt/112730602119746, or our profile at http://facebook.com/discomattlondon, where we post ALL our activity. Over & above that, you can head here and watch the home page for the latest postings.

CONTACT US – Very simply, just drop us an e-mail at matt@discomatt.com , fill in a contact form, which you can find at the bottom of our website, or send us a message via Facebook, the details replicated in a new section on the website itself.

SUPPORTING THE SCENE – Just before we finish, just a quick mention to this now integral part of our site, where we carry advertising banners for those bars, clubs, events & businesses that receive our support. Updated at least twice a week, if you wish to be included, drop your artwork in an e-mail to us (details above) and we will do our best to include you.

So that’s it for our “Summer Season Synopsis”, September and a return to all our reporting the focus now, reviews, previews, recommends, reports & music posts aplenty, as well as plenty of activity out there on the scene, so keep your eyes peeled for us on the dancefloors across London and keep catching up with us via our website &/or social network pages. About discomatt

The History........................................................Created in 2008 after a short period of blogging under his real name, the pseudonym, “Disco Matt”, was born on the back of a reputation for being London’s original party boy having partied and clubbed across the London gay scene since in mid 1990’s.........................................................Through his series of blogs via individual blogging pages which soon morphed into a full blown website (http://discomatt.com), Disco Matt established himself as an independent journalist come columnist who quickly gained a reputation for supporting & promoting one of the world’s most prolific clubbing scenes. He previewed, reviewed & recommended London gay clubs, as well as the diverse gay/metrosexual London club/bar culture, linking to & reviewing the scene top D.J.’s and generally covering the gay scene including international gay events....................................................Regularly reporting on the top events across the scene, Disco Matt’s reviews, over the years, developed a strong following, not just by clubbers, D.J’s, promoters, music producers & scene faces, but people far and wide that were looking for an insight to the incredible scene that was London. He also previewed upcoming events that signalled, either a major change or update of existing clubs, new ventures on the gAylist/metrosexual scene, or where he considered events that deserved more comprehensive coverage to that provided in other posts.............................................However, having pretty much reached the top of his game in his chosen specific field, due to a number of personal predicaments, challenges & changes in his life priorities, Disco Matt parked his writing and operation in February 2014. While the burning desire to continue remained, what this much needed period of inactivity did provide was the time & space to re-think & re-focus his activities on a broader spectrum of media and entertainment............................................................So, following this long two year lay-off, he built up the foundations for this diversification into the areas of film, theatre, radio & television where his reviewing, recommending & reporting was to be replicated & resurrected, also pointing his promotions through more visuals & video's linked to all these areas along with his core activities and passions ................................................................................The Present....................................After another (shorter) period of lay-off from mid 2016, a life changing event reignited his passion and early into 2017, Disco Matt has delivered on his promise for a new, more modern look to his website, shedding the old & tired skin in favour of something far more in keeping with the times and with his blogging roots. And he has waived a fond farewell to his clubbing days, this having also been ditched from his site & activity, rather now just focussing on the genres of film, theatre, radio, television, video and of course, music, in so doing, aiming to broaden his appeal to a much wider audience interested in the latest most cutting edge areas of media & entertainment.............................................................................His aim is to be highly regarded across the industry for his writing in these fields and ultimately become a full time critic in film &/or theatre.
