With our reviews in arrears, our previews hardly present, our music devotions derelict and our recommendations rusty, we have decided it is time to take time off, take time to re-charge, take time to re-focus & take time to re-energise, the announcement of our “Scene Summer Sabbatical & Service Scale Down”, deluding to the details of our decision, along with our desires & intentions for a full service resumption/return.
With 2012 already proving to be our own “annus horribilus” on a number of fronts, there can be little or no doubt that the activity that was always the core part of our existence, our reviews, has taken a direct hit, how did we out it?, “…woefully in arrears…”, while it is also true that the year so far has seen a distinct lack of the previews, both in full form & in focus/feature style, along with an absence of our much loved much now maligned recommendations newsletters, ones we used to, devotingly so, issue each |& every week, although this first half of 2012 has seen just half a dozen devotions, hardly the devoting our admiring audiences deserve or indeed expect. But the sorrowful story continues, as one of a major life loves, our music, has also been badly hit, planned special features, D.J. focuses &, yes, our music newsletters, all having pretty much ground to a halt, while there has been a ray of light in the form our newly launched “Picks” section which (well up until the middle of this month that is) has dominated our activity and has proved to be the one inspiration in a year that has been devoid of almost every intrinsic ingredient. So, whether it be recommends, focuses, features or reports, all that have formed part of our success recipe, our package, they have been alarmingly absent, while it is the one element that started it all that remains THE most alarming absentee, that element being our reviews.
So what’s been happening?, Well to put not too fine a point on it, the “Matt” in Disco Matt has been the cause, a whole host of issues that has afflicted Matt, having a knock on effect on Disco Matt (yes we are one & the same), close family illness issues back home in South Africa dominating both January & February, while it is now Matt’s health that is consuming our lives, to the extent that we, all too often, find ourselves so fatigued that there remains little or no energy or dive to pursue our postings with anywhere near the vigour & va va voom of previous times. Then, to compound the problems besieging us, a series of computer failures have influenced our interest & intent to deliver our devotions, we having lurched from one device to the next with little or no resolve or resolution and, in reality, without this essential element/tool, we have been akin to carrying a war wound, a lost limb, or a corroded cog in our writing wheel, a wheel that had become square rather than round and, as the saying goes, has fallen off!! So, those have been the causes and the effects have been plain to see, the figures speaking volumes, a lacklustre six reviews reaped when there should have been four times that, while with just two music newsletters, a handful of recommendations & no previews whatsoever, it certainly is a sad state of affairs we have found ourselves in, while on the positive, our scene step outs have been captured not just in pictures & video’s posted onto social networking sites, but our now infamous “nibble size tweets” have amassed an ever increasing following.
However, the fact remains that, with much of our core activity at a complete standstill and with the heavy weight of expectation of output laying heavily on our, what were, broad shoulders, we have had to look inwardly at the issues that are causing this collapse in our once wondrous writing and in so doing decide to relieve some of that pressure by sending ourselves on a scene summer sabbatical and also scale down our services, the summer sabbatical part of the equation allowing us to “re-charge”, the scaling down of services allowing us to “re-focus” and the two combined allowing us to re-energise & then “re-engage”, hence the title of our report. So what form will all of this take?, Well, as we have hinted, we will be stepping out of the scene spotlight for a few weeks, curtailing our commitments to expectant engagements while possibly continuing to make the odd cameo appearance here & there, these visits seeing a scaling down of our nibble size tweets, which for this summer sabbatical period, will however continue while we re-charge. And the scaling down of services will also impact (it has already) on our website which will hopefully see itself going through some re-charging, with further nip & tuck tweaks and improvements both to the layout & the look, meaning it is possible that the site may go down for this maintenance while we scale down our activity, shifting the focus in the direction of our social networking sites, Tumblr, Twitter & Facebook.
With the re-charging process in place, we will be then re-focussing, predominantly on those core aspects of our activity, so our reviews, our music posts & our regular recommendations, we having already decided to draw a line under the first six months of this “annus horribilus” part of our year and look forward to a remaining six months when we will be re-energised & re-engaged with our writing. So, with the sabbatical period relieving the pressure, the aim will be to roll all these posts back into prominent position, while not forgetting the elements of our activity that have proven quite fruitful in 2012, so our Picks posts & the D.J. focuses & podcast propulsions that have borne fruit through our Pick of The Day” & “Podcast of The Week” choices. But, as the next six months dawn arrives (its 1st July tomorrow) we are determined to re-start all the supporting structure we have been so fervently following in the year so far, so while our website goes through its changes, we will be continuing to update all the banners in our various “Supports” sections, so clubs & events, businesses, publications & music producers, the specialist “Orange Nation” “WE Party” devotions continuing. Moreover, we have set ourselves a weekly schedule which will kick in following the end of our sabbatical which will mark the start of our re-energising & re-engagement period, elements of this beginning to bed in from as early as tomorrow, while we remain determined to under promise on our postings and so over deliver as a result.
So the question remains, when will this summer sabbatical & service scale down end?, Well, as we go to press on our decision, its remains pretty open ended, although we expect to be fully back on stream by the beginning of September, so a sabbatical period of eight or so weeks, we taking this opportunity to apologise to those clubs & club promoters for our absence from a elongated list of events, clubs included (some benefitting from a smattering of showings) being A:M, Beyond, CasaLatina, Dish, Gigolo, Hard On!, Later, Matinee, Orange, PlayTime, Room Service, Salvation, Trade & War, while to club promoters, particularly Craig Elder, Jonny Marsh, Jodie Harsh, Suzi Kruegar, David & L.a. Hart, Tom Stephan and Kris Di Angelis, we will be back supporting but more importantly, reviewing your events as it is our reviews that is the real core of our activity and what we have become famed for & are all about. In addition, to the venues, such as The Shadow Lounge, Profile & East Bloc, we will be continuing (and in places) ramping up our support & our showings from September, while some will benefit from short steps into the scene spotlight during our summer sabbatical, Beyond one such benefactor as soon as tomorrow, while we are sure others will follow.
Well, that’s where we are, while what we have also done, not least following the inspiration drawn from a recent cinema trip, is to mastermind a Disco Matt maxim, one which will underpin the re-charging, re-focusing, re-energising & re-engagement period we now find ourselves in, it seemingly appropriate to end our report by sharing it with you, it chronicling, where we have been, where we are, and where we want to be, and it goes like this
“…The person, who risks nothing, does nothing, has nothing, but nothing happens unless we first dream. So we came, we dreamed & we tried in our different ways, but now tired, we simply get up in the morning & we try, as nothing else matters. Can we be blamed for feeling too tired to change, too scared of failure to start it all again? Well the only real failure is the failure to try and the measure of our success is how we cope with our failings, as we always must. All we know about the future is that it will be different, but perhaps what we fear is that it will be the same. So we must celebrate the changes, because everything will be alright in the end, and if it’s not alright, then trust us, it’s not yet the end…”
So here’s to our summer sabbatical serenading a new & renewed enthusiasm for what we do & how we do it, here’s to the decided mobilisation of our music devotions, the resumption of our recommendations and, most importantly, the return of our reviews. (DISCO MATT)
We search back through the memories of our minds to the days when we were very much into all things fetish, the mere feel of leather & rubber on our skins enough to get our juices flowing, although with a whole band of our friends also willing to indulge o, like us, got a real kick out of a horny happening, there was one club that ruled the waves in our books, a club by the name alone, painting a pretty clear picture of the sort of shenanigans going on, the strict dress code of leather, rubber & skinhead gear, ensuring the cavorting crowd all had the same or similar things in mind. And with its incarnations at Substation South and then Imperial Gardens, FIST very much captured our imagination for a handful of years, the combination of booze, cruise, dance, & yes, all out sex proved a winning formula, the monthly meet packed to the rafters. Yet, when promoter Suzie Krueger was forced to move on and water the brand down, Hard On! at Crash & then Hidden the result, it seemed that FIST was gone for good. But, when we heard of a reunion, a meet to recapture some of the magic & electricity of this fine fetish frolic, it simply had to be a date in our diary.
So, having reacclimatised to the capital following our lengthy trip to South Africa, as the day arrived we decided it was time to refresh our leather & rubber collection in time for this special reunion at Hidden, so took ourselves off to Rob Of London to purchase new rubber shorts, a harness & other accessories, having stupidly ditched virtually the whole of our substantial collection a few years ago. With our dress arranged, the juices that always used to flow & the excitement that always built in advance of a FIST meeting, overcame us once again, as we squeezed into our tight rubber shorts, which incidentally had perfectly positioned zips both front & back for easy entry, slipped our revealing chaps over the top, belted into our harness, arm bands & boots and finished the affair with a Rob London black vest. So, it was time to head down to Hard On! for this “F… Reunion” event (for legal reasons the IST dropped), the transformation from Disco to Crisco complete and our walk on the fetish side ready to roll into action.
Arriving at Hidden’s doors at just before 11.30, whilst a neat queue had formed, such was the efficiency of the security (or was that scant body searching?!) we were into the club entrance in a trice the always friendly door team checking us off the guestlist, although with Suzie arriving, a jocular wave saw us in amongst the action virtually immediately. With the cruise bar (known as the Blue Room) already buzzing with activity, Steven Black in charge of the tunes, warming up the crowd nicely, we headed through & up the stairs to drop off our bits & bobs, discarding the smart vest we had brought, the heat of Hard On! already beginning to tell. But with no pockets to place our phone, a text earlier to incumbent D.J. Brent Nicholls had confirmed that he would hold onto it behind the D.J. booth for safe keeping, leaving us with the only other tricky task of storing enough cash & other accruements for the fun ahead, a neat leather wrist wallet doing to trick. And, as we headed back down and to the bar to grab an energy boosting drink, we bumped into the man himself, beaming at us and declaring “oh, I can’t see your tan!” (a long story), this the first time we had caught up since both our vacations, so a gap of nearly eight weeks.
Assuming our spot by the cruise bar D.J. booth, Brent was back in no time, having popped off to sort a few things out, we kind of bringing each other a little up to date with matters, it wasn’t long before our eyes were drifting as a veritable feast of fancyable fella’s walked in, some stopping to say hello to Mr Nicholls, others giving us a quick glance, as maybe the rubber & harness look was doing the business. But, given the theme of the night, we were keen to dive into the playroom and assume our favoured FIST position in the sling, the private joke between Brent Suzie & us seemingly indicating that one of the six had our name on it. However, such was the fevered activity in this devilish dark space, all the slings were occupied, a host of others engaged in x rated action as the huge screen tempted indulgence with similar shows for all to see. So, with the disappointment of no sling, we headed back out to Brent, exclaiming such, although a sorrowful look soon turned into a smile when a familiar face gave us a tap on the shoulder, Stewart arriving ahead of his & our pal Rob, he dressed very scantly indeed, revealing a rather big bulge beneath his tight leather jock strap and with nothing much else on his lithe & toned body was certainly raising a few things other than eyebrows.
So, whilst Brent tackled the beats in the now packed out Cruise Bar and while the tougher tech cum (apt word) techno was being belted out in the Red room, we took novice Stewart in hand, showing him around the joint and explaining the lowdown of the club, before dipping back into the playroom for a bit of fervent frolicking, this one of many trips across the night. However, with the plan on each occasion to dive onto a sling being thwarted by the lack of vacant spots, we were resigned to bed over where we could to get our own piece of action, we eventually returning to Mr Nicholls’ side with a rather large smile on our face and our juices very much flowing. Indeed such was the extent of our excitement, that we chose to strip down, removing our chaps, leaving just the harness and the tight revealing & dual entry rubber shorts for all to see. And with our new felt freedom & with Brent Nicholls notching up the sexy fuelled & funky tunes, we were soon spinning on our spot just like our cousin when he “Does The Disco Matt” (maybe we should have our own video too?!?!), while the man in charge of the tunes got us in hysterics when he said “look down at the floor, you have dropped something”, which reacted a vacant look on our face, to which he replied “it’s your dignity love”, whatever did he mean?!?!?!?
With the night simply going from strength to strength and with Brent’s superb set over with, we dived back into the playroom for one last play, spotting pal Mark Thyme who was clearly enjoying himself (no dancefloor required for him), our final foray bearing fruit, while a tumble across into the red room found Dave Randall in charge of the turbo boosted tech, the speed of these sounds easily within our comfort zone in the days of Trade, but in our more sedate years, it was just a little too much. So, with the resignation that this amazing outing had very much tipped our enjoyment scales, we sought out our pal, after dressing back into our chaps and decided to call it a day, waving our farewells to Hidden for the final Hard On! time, departing with Mr Nicholls to compare notes on what proved to be one of the most enjoyable Fetish events in a long time, the crowd, the company, the music & the extracurricular activity spot on.
So, in concluding on the success of F… Reunion at Hard On!, we only need to use one word, resounding, the whole vibe and feel one of the best we have experienced of any Hard On! meet we have been to, even possibly shading our Boxing Day bash of a year ago (well probably equalling it to be fair). Despite the disappointment of not being able to sink into a sling, there was certainly no shortage of opportunity to do the dirty deed and we even got to have a dextrous dance in the Cruise Bar to yet another brilliant beat-tastic funky & fulsome Brent set, the other D.J.’s also playing their part in serving up stacks of sexy & sounds. Plus, our meet up with Stewart really made our night and with familiar faces a-plenty aside plus with our rear end rammed, “F… Reunion” proved a huge hit. As for Hard On!, well it is on the cusp of
a new dawn, with a switch in venues to Factory, further down in Vauxhall, so we look forward to the change with interest, lots of plans afoot to beef up the offering and move it closer to the FIST days that we so much came to love & adore. (CRISCO MATT)
Postscript
Have savoured yet another splendid set from Brent Nicholls at this special F… Reunion event, we kind of hinted that it would be good to see a new “Hard On!” mix from the man, and he has come up trumps, this latest devotion to our favourite fetish frolic full of funky, dirty & sexy beats, which we reckon is one of his best yet. With the title “Putting The Funk Into Fetish” very much hitting the mark, Brent combines some Hard On! classic tunes re-hashed, with some new corkers, 18 hot & horny tracks, Brent neatly explains that “…It takes the sexy approach with driving bass lines, uplifting crescendos, resulting in an underground yet accessible accessible feel…” he adding “…You haven’t seen a guy shake his ass like he does in chaps?! add boots, and it pure ‘dirty dance club’ at its horniest…”(could he be referring to Crisco?!?!?), while he also say’s “…I do not expect the hardcore lovers to go for this immediately, but step out of the past and into the future….otherwise you will go the way of the dinosaurs..” So, we join Brent by saying, take a trip into the future of fetish by downloading his masterful mix at http://djbrentnicholls.com/web/2011/04/02/podcast-hard-on-putting-the-funk-into-fetish-mix/.
Back from South Africa for just over a week and the second review gets handed to cousin Crisco Matt, who stepped into his leather & rubber for a special event at Hard On! and this is what he summarises of the night, all in advance of the full review…….
Getting strapped into rubber for the first time in at least ten years got us right in the mood for this special reunion at Hard On! on Saturday, a meeting of minds with Suzie Krueger’s now long running fetish night, with its former, for the wider press called F… (but for us FIST), the legendary experience that used to regularly draw us into Imperial Gardens in Camberwell & Substation South before that. So, with much promise of a harder edge to this Hard On! supported meet, plus with plenty of meat on offer (if you know what we mean), we were Hidden in Vauxhall bound, arriving at just on 11.30 and immediately into the groove. With not quite the electric feel that FIST used to have, yet with so many up for hot & horny action, a first dip into the playroom found a veritable feast of frolicking, all the slings already full (very disappointing), although our night was made all the better by meeting up with a guy called Stewart who made our experience exceptional rather than average. Equally exceptional was the music, the two rooms serving up different styles, yet both attracted good crowds of cavorters, The Cruise Bar our favourite, not least as Steven Black warmed us up well & then Brent Nicholls notched up the sexy fuelled & funky tunes to leave us spinning on our spot just like our cousin when he “Does The Disco Matt” (maybe we should have our own video1?). With familiar faces a-plenty & with our rear end rammed, “F… Reunion” proved a huge hit, so with major thanks to Suzie & her team and with much more to say, it’s “…ready, steady, go for the review…” (CRISCO MATT)
Getting our feet back under the table has meant that the usual focus posts are still not yet back, but we couldn’t let the moment pass (well cousin Crisco Matt couldn’t) without giving a big shout for a re-union that we have been looking forward to for some time, ever since the news broke on it late last year to be precise. Yes, that fantastically fabulous club FIST (we use the full word, no census here!) is back for a one-off at its successor club Hard On! at Hidden in Vauxhall tonight (Saturday 26th March) and in our now time aged tradition, we wanted to bring you the latest & last minute detail on this meet of meat.
First and foremost the obvious letter of the day is F and whilst the organisers, due to guidance controls, have been unable to advertise the meet it’s its full glory (i.e. FIST!), hence the “F…” appearing across their marketing of the event, we can unequavically state that Fist is back, hopefully bringing with it a whole raft of faces from the halcyon days at Imperial Gardens and even Substation South before it (yes we can remember those days too!). And before we hone in on some of the detail, may we stress that whilst F… will take place at the home of Hard On!, Hidden in Vauxhall, Hard On! itself steps aside to let what will hopefully prove to be a successful concept & one-off into a regular event, or as we prefer to call it, meet (or is that meat!). Plus, the whole ethos of F…, is to re-live some of those edgy & electric days when FIST ruled the fetish waves & was THE place to go let go, exploring the more full-on & raunchy side of sex & sexual intrigue mixed in with mind bending music.
So, with the scene set, what can you expect for “F… Re-Union” tonight?, well definitely a feel more akin to those days of FIST for sure, as the music policy toughens up for a start, the “Red Room”, for Hard On! adorned by the likes of Hifi Sean & Brent Nicholls, actually being given away to more of the FIST original style of sound, D.J.’s Hugo’sland, Dave Randall & Graham D responsible for the hard house & techno tinged tunes that FIST officiano’s will be used to, twisted tech tracks & electro techno to really stretch the limits, while plenty of stretching will be on offer from the very pervy performance coming (maybe cumming too!) at ya from the stage show by “Sexor”, so something to definitely watch out for, the room being labelled not “Red” but the “F… Me Harder Arena”, which says it all when it comes of what to expect.
But the music doesn’t stop there, as in the “Blue Room” (that middle one by the bar), Hard On! residents (they were at FIST too) Steven Black & Brent Nicholls will be providing a little bit (just a bit you understand) of a respite from the tough tech tunes of next door, with some more progressive, funky yet dirty house, ones that Mr Nicholls explains, “…will provide a sanctuary from those beaten into submission by the beats in the red room…”. Plus, we can announce the late addition of special guest Jon Bradley, added into this “F…Me Funky” room.
Now that’s the music, what about the rest? Well, the infamous playroom will be in action with plenty of toys & equipment to fulfil your fetish desires and, of course, plenty of action for which FIST became renowned for. This special space aside, the usual cruising corridors will be teaming to tottie, while the outside terrace space will be the cool down needed from the hot, hot action inside and a change to grab a snack from the specially positioned bar too.
Now, to the all important detail and F… Re-Union takes place tonight (Saturday 26th March) at Hidden in Vauxhall, doors opening at 10 p.m. and the club running through until a planned 5 a.m. closing (that’s winter time folks) with entry at £20 but discounted to £15 for Hard On! members. Now, unlike Hard On!, F… Re-Union does NOT have a members only policy, so all are welcome, but what they do have is a strict dresscode of leather, rubber, uniform, skin gear & simply your boots, but definitely boots not trainers & definitely no regular jeans, you know the score. Plus, this is the last event that the Hard On! team will be holding at Hidden as they will be moving their operations to a new Vauxhall based venue from April, so another good reason to make it to F… Re-Union tonight. More detail, should you need it =, is available at http://hardonclub.co.uk or via our friend’s Fetishpig at direct link http://fetishpig.co.uk/web/2011/03/01/get-f-sat-26-3-2011/.
So, we leave you with the message from promoter Suzie Krueger when she says, “…calling all rubber bottoms, leather tops, tattooed punks, gender bender kinksters & horny hunks….” by joining her in saying, get your arse down to Hidden tonight as we will surely be doing (damn we may have to wear rubber!) as this is going to be one fabulous, fantastic, feisty, fierce & full-on F… of a party. (CRISCO MATT)
