Author With spring having finally sprung, it seems the scene is also springing into action this weekend, a champion choice of a marvellous set of Saturday meets seeing us extend our Best Bites from three to four, we offering ample alternatives to what will no doubt be the most dynamic draw & most popular party of the day.
Having been plagued with a serious viral illness along with other health complications, we have been pretty much out of action for a good few weeks, but with a determination to do what we do best, we thought we would kick start our return with our Weekend Recommends newsletter, picking out our Best Bites of where to be & be seen on the scene this weekend, we acknowledging that one party looks like being the most dynamic draw, while the other three offer ample alternatives for those looking for something a little different.
So let’s get to it and to our first Best Bite, which goes to DISH, which returns this Saturday (13th Sept) at East Bloc for its fourth outing of the year, this brilliant brand having celebrated its birthday back in January and has continued to ride a wave crest that has seen both the February & March events packed to the rafters. Indeed part of the draw of DISH is that amazing atmosphere that host venue East Bloc engenders, the underground & cavernous nature of the club harping back to the decadent feel of the nineties, yet with an up to date & modern twist, many party goers of that era making comparisons with Crash. AS for DISH itself, in the twelve of so months that it has been running, promoters Tom Stephan & Borja Pena have benefitted from a loyal following while also attracting one of the most stylishly mixed crowds we have seen in a long while, DISH’s forefather, MEAT, also having cemented the latter as one of the hip, hot & happening events on the capitals clubbing calendar. AS for this month’s event, well the team seem to be sticking with that winning formula, which thirty neatly explain by saying “…Here at DISH we follow a very simple recipe, quality beats served by London’s finest chefs…” the chefs clearly the D.J.’s, no less than six serving up scores of scintillating sounds across three rooms of fun, the aptly named “Main Dish” room brimming with “…hearty beats to satisfy!…” from both Tom & Borja, while the “Side Dish” second space sees Mark-Ashley Dupé & Daniel Delay will keep the room jumping & pumping with “…familiar favourites we all know and love!…”. But it doesn’t stop there as the compact & bijou “Tapas” third room where Cathal & Franx De Crystal will “…tease your appetite with a bit of spice!…” translating to tons of terrific tunes, proceedings helped along by hosts La Pequeña, Andrew Moore & Tomino, doors opening at East Bloc this Saturday (14th Apr) from 10.30 p.m., with DISH running to a planned 6 a.m. finish, entry £7 before midnight, £10 thereafter, the team urging you to arrive early to guarantee entry, more detail should you need it out at https://facebook.com/DISHLONDON &/or https://facebook.com/events/553122601387843/.
So onto our second Best Bite and we stick with Shoreditch, moving slightly further round to Hoxton in fact and to The Hoxton Pony, a venue that was very much at the forefront of the explosion of this area as the new hip, happening & trendsetting spot in London a small handful of years ago and while Hoxton may have been absorbed into the expanse that we known as Shoreditch, it remains at the epicentre of metrosexual clubbing activity. Indeed, The Hoxton Pony, having firmly established its niche yet stylish clubbing & socialising set following its launch in 2009, can also be proud as being part of the expansion of the Shoreditch scene which today sees one of the biggest concentration of club venues in the whole of London. Famed for its decadence and a smidgen of anarchy, The Hoxton Pony is particularly popular with locals on a Friday night, a whole host of D.J.’s from across the capital landing on this jewel in the Hoxton clubbing crown, names such as Zach Burns & Tony English adding their own brand of upfront house music to the more electro tech beats of the Pony’s resident D.J.’s. However, it is Saturday’s and particularly the venue’s new night, Rapture, that is turning heads & drawing the crowds, the promoters saying of this night, “…Rapture delivers the ultimate night of mayhem and despicable party antics with a mixed crowd…”, this Saturday (13th April) seeing one The Hoxton Pony’s favourite D.J.’s hit the decks for a specially extended 6 hour set and one that will surely showcase Tony’s diverse genre styles which range from electro through upfront vocal house to more eurostyle beats that belie his indistinct links with Spain & Ibiza. Indeed, having played out to capacity crowds for polysexual clubbing brand Puscha, for whom he has been a resident for close on 10 years, his repertoire also extends to familiar gay territory parties including Lovechild, Hustlaball, Popcorn at Heaven and the recent launched club collaboration, This Is Prohibition, while Spanish clubbing brand SuperMartXe is among a number of other mainland & Ibiza based clubs he has played for, while he was the creator of Gaydar Radio’s very popular Saturday night show, Club Nation & has hosted a number of other radio shows in his time. As for Rapture itself, well it takes place at The Hoxton Pony this coming Saturday (13th April) from an early start of 8 p.m., running through till 2.a.m, the team hinting that you should “…dress to impress, we’re the most glamorous and best night out in Shoreditch. To our third Best Bite now and we head into Soho for monthly meet BakeBox which plays out for the third time at the Green Carnation this Saturday (13th April), no doubt building on the success of the launch back in February when it was known as Baked. However, a shift in the name change has only served to attract even more attention and last month’s meet was every bit as popular, the blend of house classics & anthems with more upfront & current house tunes, with a dollop of disco for good measure, really hitting the mark with followers of the BakeBox beats recipe. And promoters Chris Brogan & Jay Jaymen have very much created a brand that offers something delightfully different to the norm, the light & fluffy music policy setting it aside for its clubbing compatriots, both boys say of BakeBox, “…this is our Box. It’s not just any Box. It’s a Box full of YOUR favourites. And by favourites, we mean all those tracks that get your feet tapping, hands clapping, divas singing and men jigging…” adding “…we are bringing back more fun, more frolics and more floor fillers for those who love their classic, vocal and disco house and a whole lot of anthems. BakeBox has been mixed and prepared by the very best DJs, bringing Soho something fresh and new!…”, guest D.J. Nathan Six fitting in with the formula really well. Indeed, having seen more than a handful of prolific performances from the talent individual, Nathan having played for the likes of Beyond, Matinee & SuperMartXe, while he was a staple resident ingredient for the sadly demised Profile & Lo-Profile where his sounds selections showed just why the BakeBox team have chosen him for this next party, his sets nothing short of spectacular on all the occasions we have seen him play. So, we reach our fourth Best Bite and, surprisingly for some, land on Matinee which returns to London this Saturday (13th April) with its “Starship” party, surely set to see host venue Fire a complete roadblock and, potentially, uncomfortable with it. Indeed, we have stated our case against the venue as the right place for this Spanish superclub & global brand giant, not least that Matinee is famed for its flamboyant & huge production, the arched nature of Fire just not right. But it seems that the London promotions team are intent on continuing the matinee story here and one thing that we cannot deny is its sheer popularity, hence that we felt it should be included here. And, true to form with the matinee top brass, they are flying across one of their main resident super star D.J.’s to headline this London event, Lydia Sanz very much part of a team that has recently expanded, Lydia having become more popular across Europe in recent months, hence why she is being used more & more often as part of the touring team. But the list of D.J.’s extend much further, Matinee London landing some of its top residents for this “Starship” event, D’Johnny, Gonzalo Rivas and Jamie Head joining Lydia in the Fire main room, while Massimo Paramour and Maze & Masters sort he sounds in the second Mirrorarch space, while across in the third, lounge room, its Rob Sykes, Zach Burns & Fabio Luigi that offer something delightfully different to the full-on main room. As for the production/, well expect the usual Matinee thrills & spills, even if the stage has nowhere near that impact “Starship” deserves, while we are sure the dancers with be dressed to the high nines in space themed costumes to make up for the lack of stage space. In terms of the event detail, Matinee “Starship” takes place this coming Saturday (13th April) at Fire in Vauxhall, doors opening at 11 p.m. and the party running through to a planned 7 a.m. finish, although with Beyond (the official “Starship” afterparty) opening its doors at the early time of 3.am., we reckon it may drain Fire earlier than the Matinee team would like. As we approach one of the most momentous & meaningful weekends in our year, we thought it wholly appropriate to re-launch our weekly recommends newsletters, this “Best Bites” the first half of the posting picture, where we pick out our three top of the tree event choices of where to be & be seen on the scene in Soho, Vauxhall & Shoreditch, along with mini mentions for two other hot shots that have featured in our full on focuses.
Well, it’s been a while, not just a few weeks, but a few months, although it feels good to be back in the “Best Bites” recommendations driving seat, that last analogy pretty apt this weekend as one of the hot shot mentions has a driving format of shorts. But the weekend is also momentous & meaningful as Saturday (1st Dec) marks two occasions, first & foremost, World AIDS Day, a cause that is extremely close to our heart, it also marks the first day in our birth month. For others however, while for others, December 1st is the first day of advent, meaning Christmas is, from here on in, very much in focus. However, it is this weekend we are focussing on, picking out our three top choices, one each from Soho, Vauxhall & Shoreditch, while those two hot shots also get a little look in.
So to our first and to Soho first, as it is the wonder on Wardour Street that steals that top of the tree crown this weekend, the crowning glory for us being Friday frolic PLAY>TIME, the award winning & outstanding outing that has become a firm favourite of ours & many more, promoter jay Roberts having very much made Friday the new Saturday in Soho, even toppling the might of another award winner that was the darling of the clubbing circuit scene on Friday’s, Onyx having gone by the wayside. But PLAY>TIME forges ahead with its fabulousness, this Friday no exception, as the team welcome two terrific talents to the D.J. decks, Kris Di Angelis making his debut for this brilliant brand, while Mikey D makes a welcome return on the back of his prolific new(ish) podcast “House Music All Night Long”. But no PLAY>TIME would be the same without a that significant slice of sexy seduction, Jay introducing Daniel Dias to the PLAY>TIME podium, Mr Roberts also gyrating his booty to the beats, not least that he & Daniel have recently “shot a scene” (you know the sort we mean) together, this along adding to the allure & excitement of this enthralling event. Now while we are on the subject of Soho & this wonder on Wardour Street, Profile/Lo-Profile’s GM Kerry Chapman & her terrific team are marking World AIDS Day on Saturday with the return of their very popular “strip-a-thon”, the bevy of beauties behind the bar getting the strip down balls (no pun intending) rolling, your donations to charities The Food Chain & National AIDS Trust part of the process, as the more you put in the pot, the more the barmen reveal, while D.J.’s Alessandro Londra, Rob Sykes & Nathan Six will be sharing deck duty, possibly entering into a topless track turn or two. Onward to Vauxhall and there has been much change down Orange Nation way recently, a lot of news we need to fill you in on which will have to wait a while, although what cannot wait is our top of the tree choice we have picked form the multi leaved ON offering, A:M having gone “Ultra” on us recently, taking the Friday night helm vacated by a departing Onyx, this amazing afterhours having moved forward its opening time into Friday nights, but still running deep into Saturday morning. Still currently based at Fire, A:M “Ultra” is, however, on the move this weekend, switching to smaller sister venue Covert, although in our view is the smarter sister as it offers two delightful dancefloors, an accessible upstairs space, all sure to fit A:M like a glove. And for the first of a three week run here, promoter Steven Sharp introduces young blood beatmaster Matt Bogard to the D.J. decks, he joined in another A:M newbie, Ania, while the continuity is cornerstoned by A:M favourites Paul Heron & D’Johnny, while Onyx, having given away to its afterhours associate, remains in the picture, hosting the second space, D.J.’s on pop-tastic duty including Tasty Tim & Little Rob. So we head out to Shoreditch and it is East Bloc that covets our top of the tree choice crown this weekend, Saturday sporting a second birthday bash as TheMenWhoFell2Earth (MWF2E) mark this momentous occasion with a pulsating package that includes special guest D.J. Luke Howard (of Horse Meat Disco, Paradise 45 & Lovebox fame), he joining MWF2E regulars Amp & Deck and Hits&Mrs in the main room, while the second space is sorted by D.J. duo Push The Button, all this hinting towards wayout & alternative action with a capital W & A, this branded party very much for decernists of tech, nu disco & electro. But the bravado doesn’t end at the D.J.’s, oh no, as “…the man with the plan…” host Oly is back and my does he know how to host (to be seen to be believed) while as it’s a MWF2E birthday bash, they have the infamous act Bother Boys back, taking to the stage to serve up “…song beauty & the ridiculous…” meaning that anything could happen here and it probably will. Plus, while the focus with be on birthday, the team recognise that they share their Saturday with World AIDS day, so will be raising funds for the Terrence Higgins Trust, a slice of the door plus bucket donations going to this very worthy cause. Now for that second hot shot, second an appropriate word as WE party London celebrates its 2nd Anniversary here in the capital on Saturday (1st Dec) and is very much THE place to be & be seen on the scene (unless you’re a MWF2E fanatic of course) this, fabulous “Formula 2” sprinting off the starting grid at the Coronet, D.J. drivers vying for pole position including the Fernando Alonso of WE, Carlos Gallardo, who speeds in from Spain especially for the event, he surely having a task on his hands with the Sebastian Vettel of the London scene, Steve Pitron, while other runners in the race include Paul Heron, & D’Johnny in the main room, the Room Service second space sported by Jodie Harsh, Fat Tony & Ariel. Despite a complete lack of PR and serious question marks over the D.J. line up, we throw our Weekend Focus attention on Matinee, which returns to London this Saturday, once again going head to head with Beyond in a towering ten hour happening that, however, leaves us asking lots of blending or buckling brand questions, this along with other issues that also leave us luke warm rather than piping hot in recommendation
When we look back across the recent times we have been stepping out on the capitals clubbing circuit, we have been blessed with witnessing some of the globe’s biggest brands doing the same, La Demence, Muccassassina, SuperMartXe, Space, The Week, La Troya, Cafe Ole, Scream, & Delice being just a handful of happenings, while we have also been fortunate to have played out in home grown brands that have, like their international counterparts, made a splash abroad, Trade, Orange, Salvation & Lovechild four fabulous examples. Yet there are two names missing from each clubbing category here, the former collection being a Spanish superclub & the latter an awesome afterhours achiever, the global giant that is Matinee belonging to those international imported, while it could only be Beyond that is the home grown clubbing colossus that has made it big on the international stage, the recent relationship between the two here in London being not quite so rosy, as the team behind Beyond always used to see Matinee as not just direct competition but a forceful threat, often extending the usual afterhours into either eight or twelve hours affairs in an attempt to de-rail the position & popularity of Matinee.
However, 2012 has seen an about turn on this rocky relationship, as, having taken a short break from the scene, Matinee not only returned to the capital, but its bounce back was very much orchestrated by those same organisers of Beyond, Orange Nation, while were considerable question marks over Matinee re-emerging in London within the same clubbing corporation that promotes Spanish brand WE Party in London, not to mention the once considered advisory of Matinee, Beyond. But times they do change the saying “…if the cloak fits…” very appropriate in the case of these two brands as this coming Saturday marks the second occasion in just three months that Matinee & Beyond have joined forces, the last outing, by all accounts being a roadblock affair (not sure how we missed it). Yet with the feeling running around regular clubbers on the Vauxhall scene that it is fast becoming same old same old, there is a nagging thought in our minds that this latest collaboration between two of the biggest named brands on the capital’s scene is just that, not least when you take a glance at the D.J. line-up which virtually mirrors the last, save for J. Louis who makes his third appearance for Matinee London this year alone, while looking at some of the names in the frames, the promotions team have seemingly heavily weighed the event in favour of Matinee rather than Beyond, despite it being in the latter’s own backyard, Area.
So what of the D.J. line up and other event detail? Well, with a noticeable absence of the usual press releases we have needed to resort to social networking research to find the necessary information and, according to the “official” event page which, despite given the size & magnitude of the party, was only released three days ago, we find that joining J Louis are London based D.J.’s that have played for every single Matinee party this year, Massimo Paramour, Guy Williams & Rob Sykes, not that awe inspiring to be honest, while we are assuming that D’Johnny, Alan K, Paulo Moreno, Verity Mayes, Bryony Masters & David Jimenez are flying the Beyond flag. However, given that this is a twelve hour event spread across three rooms, we cannot help but think that the D.J. team is spread pretty thinly, while despite assurances to the contrary, we find a bunch of spinning stars that were not only playing Beyond last weekend, but do pretty much every week, while others that would normally expect to be rotational, have been left out completely. Moreover, we are left a little confused by the promotional teams choices of D.J.’s as, if we are not mistaken, Guy Williams & Rob Sykes are part of the Beyond rotational residency team, so which flag are they flying on Saturday/Sunday, we hardly having to mention the names that are missing, the absence of one duo not just this weekend it seems, we having been reliably informed that they were told that their music style “…does not fit with Beyond…” despite them having be residents for the brand since 2005, all this leaving us deeply concerned that, particularly Beyond, is being badly buckled rather than brilliantly blended in this latest collaboration.
So what of the event theme “Ghetto Fabulous”? Well with no PR to go we, we are scratching our heads to be honest, the event info stating “…who’s got the most bling?, who’s rocking the latest high tops?, who’s new era snapback is freshest and who’s six pack is the hardest?…” they going on to say that “…all the hottest boys will be out to see at two global super-brands go head to head…” we still not sure about the Ghetto part of the event theme, unless they mean it’s going to have the feel of the Ghetto (let’s hope not!!). But it goes on when they say “…we’re pulling out all the stops at the follow up to our ‘Summer Blowout’, an 80’s throwback where the circuit boys get their inspiration. Expect the biggest possible production, the hottest possible gogo’s, the most talented DJs and of course the most up for it crowd in London…”. So maybe the 80’s throwback part refers to Ghetto, while the “the most talented D.J.’s” claim quite frankly doesn’t hold much water, although perhaps we are going a little far there as, collectively, there is well over 70 years of experience behind the decks, albeit that this Matinee vs. Beyond event is missing some of its most high profile & experienced hands, enough said. But one thing is for sure, the production & the dancers should be top notch, not least that the organisers confirm that “…the dancers & dance shows are choreographed by our sensational in-house superstars Shaun Capewell & Elektra Paris…” their pedigree for putting on spectacular shows extending to prolific WE, CasaLatina, & A:M events, as well as both Beyond & Matinee, Area’s stages & podiums sure to be propelled to their fullest potential.
Having said our piece (or is that pieces) with regard to this latest Beyond Matinee affair, lets, for a minute, concentrate on the all important detail, this “Ghetto Fabulous” event taking place this coming Saturday (10th November) at Area in Vauxhall, doors opening at midnight & the event running till 10.am. in a slightly reduced running time to the previous party , advance tickets very much the way to go as, despite what we have said, this is sure to be a roadblock affair, very much like the last outing that we missed, these tickets out online at direct link http://orangenation.co.uk/events/beyond-vs-matinee-ghetto-fabulous/ priced at £15, while you can always venture into Soho to stores Prowler, Clone Zone & 50 Dean St, or by asking over the bar(s) at Comptons & Ku. We may have been dazzled by the 2012 Olympics opening ceremony, but what is making us truly excited is the much prized Beyond membership key fob that will be handed out during the massive 12 hour “Summer Blowout” event which takes place tonight/tomorrow morning, DM delving into the detail of this & some last minute news of THE happening of the weekend.
The 2012 Olympics may have Danny Boyle creating all the spectacle & drama, but as our favourite club brand & awesome afterhours enters a new era on this Olympic weekend, it is new promoter Ben Kaye that is pressing all our excitement buttons, as not only is he taking the helm at a pivotal moment, joining two blockbusters brands together for a one-off outing, but he is launching (or should we say re-launching) the much prized & sought after Beyond membership, this time coming our way by a very smart little key fob. But while this is much cause for excitement (more info on that shortly), there is much more to tempt you into Area’s doors tonight/tomorrow morning, not least an all-star cast of D.J.’s from both the Beyond & the Matinee camps, the latter flying in their latest star turn, Javier Medina, while there are some real back-to-back set treats in store.
So, we propelled all the P.R. in our post “Brand Match Magnificence” (check it out at http://discomatt.com/web/?p=5636) but as we missed out on devoting a full focus to the vent, we will take you through some of the highlights of this masterful meet & then run back through that all important detail. But naturally we have to start with the wonderful news that Beyond has a new promoter in the form of one Ben Kaye and a better choice the Orange Nation top brass couldn’t have made, as Ben brings with him a wealth of talent, experience & contacts from his clubbing exploits both here in the capital & across the globe. Indeed, Ben is kind of a global guy in terms of some of the brands he has been connected with, not least the massive Spanish sensation that is WE Party, Ben having been heavily involved with events both here in London & in Madrid, while he has also been hopping around the world with WE head cheese Victor Pallas & his team on what seems a never-ending & enthralling “On Tour” series of meets.
However, back here in London, Ben has also been connected & involved in the biggest charity clubbing event on the calendar, The Wig Party, an annual party that has grown in stature & status each year in the last five, now attracting scores of A list celebrities as well as expanding the offer into a second outing, Match seeing “The Masked Ball” launch to amazing accolade, Ben at the centre of it all & contributing considerably. So, he brings to Beyond all this experience as well as a catalogue full of contacts, his face one of the more familiar on the capitals clubbing circuit and, as a result should prove an accomplished asset to this awesome afterhours which is very much on the up & up. And, as a first feather in his cap, Ben finds himself promoting & re-launching that membership we mentioned earlier, a pass that has plenty of benefits, not least fast track entry, preferential coatcheck facilities & access to the two VIP balconies, the new one at the front of Area’s main room very impressive indeed, so, this much sought after membership key fob being a major reason why an early arrival at tonight’s event is advisable.
However, there are plenty of other reasons to make a date with this “Summer Blowout” event, not least the enormous D.J. line-up, the promotions team patching together players from both brands, although, unsurprisingly, there is a considerable weighting towards Beyond, perhaps reflective of the fact that is it’s this brilliant brands backyard that is hosting the joint event. That said, Matinee get more than a look in as inbound to London especially for this party is our Barca boy, Javier Medina, a terrific talent who’s musical genre origins lean towards tribal & tech, although, having represented Matinee across Europe & in the US over the last twelve months, has evolved his sound to include more vocal infusions in his performances, while staying true to his roots. And having commissioned a special podcast to celebrate his inaugural for Matinee (& Beyond of course) here in London, it is clear that those tribal roots come through from the off, while the in & out injections of vocals keeps the Matinee style of sound honest enough to indicate that Javier will find favour with the “Summer Blowout” main room of revellers, his compilation well worth a listen &/or download by going to http://orangenation.podomatic.com/entry/2012-07-19T03_57_39-07_00.
But in true Beyond style, there will be three rooms of sound and that all-star cast of residents deployed in familiar format, so The Chapel space sporting the likes of David Jimenez, Paul Christian, & D’Johnny, while The Terrace room boasts Jonny M, Rob Sykes & two of the special back-to-back set performers, lovely lady’s Verity Mayes & Bryony Masters mixing up plenty of tech & tribal, while the more upfront & euphoric house sounds that The Sharp Boys have in their armoury will surely be one of the highlight performances not to be missed here. However, all eyes will be on the main room for the meaty part of this meet, Javier set to star between 5 & 7 a.m., following on from the first back-to-back D.J. performance from Alan K & Paulo Moreno, while for us it is the headline set from 7 till 10 a.m. that is exciting us the most, as the recently formed duo team of Steve Pitron & Jamie Head come together again to surely lift the roof off this “Summer Blowout” bash, Mr Pitron ready & waiting to storm the show with a score or more of sounds, many lifted from his recently released double podcast production “Summer 2012”, both essential additions to your compilation collection by going to http://stevepitronsessions.podomatic.com. And while the exact line-up & timings have not been confirmed, we reckon that Fat Tony will round of the main room action from 10 till midday tomorrow morning, meaning a music fest to match the might of Matinee & Beyond combined.

With the Wig Party’s reputation for clubbing glamour sophistication & style in combination with charitable causes, thus attracting the cream of the scene & celebrity crop and proving ever more popular year on year, it was only a matter of time before the team behind this annual event would seek to score a second yearly soiree success, Disco Matt delving deep into the details on “The Masked Ball” which hits the ground running this coming Sunday with a spectacular showcase.
Dancing In Disguise
We are fabulously fortunate to find ourselves within a sparkling scene that, like the biggest & brightest of rainbows, superbly shines & shows off the full colourful spectrum of clubbing concepts, whether it be internationally renowned brands such as WE, Matinee & Salvation, or home-grown gatherings such as Beyond, Orange & Trade, London very much proving a fruitful partying playing field that encompasses one of the most diverse clubbing communities & cultures in the world. And that also goes for the venues that house all these happenings, from former theatres to abundant arches and from state of the art super structures to bijou basements, the capitals clubbing circuit pretty much having it all. Then add to this a plethora of promoters propelling their productions on a plentiful partying public and the picture is certainly as prolific as you will find anywhere, an insatiable desire from a catalogue of creators to cater for every type of taste making for one of the richest tapestries of tantalising turns that we know. But when it comes to combining both clubbing & charitable causes, it seems that one particular outfit have got it down to a tee, having built on a firm foundation that has seen its annual events grow in both popularity & stature to the degree that it was simply a matter of when as opposed to if it would extend its offering into a second showcase to score a success with the scene.
Brawn At The Ball
The Wig Party has certainly captured the imagination, one that started as a pretty small & select slice on the clubbing & social scene four years ago, has now grown into a massive annual event each October, drawing in the cream of scene along celebrities a-plenty, notable attendees including Leona Lewis & Danni Minogue, while a host of other have made discreet & cameo appearances, often attracting the national newspaper paparazzi, all which has propelled The Wig Party to a position of prominence within the clubbing circuit calendar, as a consequence the October event making headline news in pulications across the land. And it seems that the scene, year on year, has responded resplendently, not just donning wigs for a charitable cause, but going all out with some of the most extravagant & opulent costumes & apparel to match the sumptuous surroundings which, for the first three years were within the wonderful walls of Cafe De Paris, although the 2011, due to that huge demand & popularity, moved across to Mayfair, further enhancing this prolific party’s prominence on the scene schedule. So having become the amazing annual attraction that it has, demand for the October event far outstripping its capable supply, the team being The Wig Party have been under considerable pressure to pander to its adoring public, the product of this process being “The Masked Ball” which, like its bigger sister, looks like storming the scene and making more of those heavenly headlines.
Masks At the Ready
So, with the scene set, what is “The Masked Ball” all about? Well, the format is similar to The Wig party itself, although with one intrinsic difference, the emphasis being on masks rather than wigs, although we highly suspect that veteran “wig-ers” will be wearing their handsome head pieces with pride, of course along with the mandatory mask. But as we have said, wigs are not necessarily part of the makeup of this event, rather, in the words of the Wig Party promotions team, “…the dress code is very relaxed but wearing a mask is compulsory, think simple but chic, think sexy and fun..” they adding “…our famous pageant is taking a back seat on this event making “The Masked Ball” a different yet equally fabulous charity event where dancing and seduction is the main aim, so wear footwear to keep on moving and clothing (or lack of) in which to sweat…”. But the central theme of raising funds for charitable causes that is at the core of The Wig Party is very much part of “The Masked Ball’s” aims & achievements too, the main benefactor being The National Aids Trust, an incredible organisation noted as the UK’s leading HIV/AIDS charity and one which is dedicated to transforming society’s response to HIV, NAT provides fresh thinking expertise and practical resources for those living with the virus, while they also campaign for change in a whole series of ways. Indeed the man behind the original Salvation parities, prolific promoter Alex Erfan, is very much connected & involved with both The Wig party & this event, while Joshua Rafter, the man behind Outlet, one of the best known gay property companies in the UK, heads up a team that reads a bit like a scene who’s who, notable names including Ben Kaye, Alan X, Jon Dennis, Rob Sykes, Chris Jepson, Jerry Boston, Mark Barrett, Kevin Arpino, Mark Mackenzie & Matthew Arnold, while the promotions team have superb scene starlets Naomi Ruiz, Suzana Quentin & Katy Lawrence on board, joining a host of other names that make for one of the most gorgeous & glitterati gatherings of magnificent minds anywhere. And it seems that The Wig party team are pulling out plenty of stops for “The Masked Ball”, as along with a confimed D.J. line up & prolific P.A., they are promising excellent entertainment that includes “…the charming sounds of a string quartet as our guests arrive…” plus an amazing aerialist show to kick off proceedings, other attractions including walk-about magicians, a caricature artist, trot card readers, fortune tellers & the like, very much making this a colourful pageant to satisfy all the senses. That said, having a great time is also what “The Masked Ball” is also about and the team have lined up a superb set of D.J.’s to stimulate your musical senses, The Wig party’s resident Rob Sykes the first to get our mini focus and a star that has been stepping out on the scene for many a moon, clubs such as Factor 25, Action & Juicy part of his considerable C.V, of achievements, while most recently he played for the massive Matinee “The Return” party which stormed back onto the scene in January, Rob’s main room performance showing that he hasn’t lost his touch for turning out a terrific tune and a set showing well worth a listen by checking out his devoted podcast at http://djrobsykes.podomatic.com/entry/2012-01-18T14_44_50-08_00. Fabulous Nu-Funkster
But the music and the performances don’t stop there, as the team have extended to offer to a second dancing space, Tony English joining the party and bringing with him a wealth of talent that extends to brands such as SuperMartXe, Puscha & Lovechild, while he has hosted his own radio show and now takes the helm of Gaydar Radio’s Club Nation show every Saturday night, Tony being in touch with some of the biggest names in the business & showcasing some of the newest & freshest sounds coming out of Europe & Spain in particular, a country that he remains incredibly passionate about. And joining Tony is another Lovechild star although a man with a repertoire that extends to pretty much every major party in the capital, let’s see, Action, Beyond, Crash, Hard On!, Industri, Matinee, PSP & Salvation, while a score of years & more still see antipodean Brent Nicholls cutting a stride on the scene, Lo-Profile’s “Playtime” just one of many parties that draw on his exceptional experience & towering talent. Playing genres that extend to disco to funky house & having inspired a new style of genre which he labelled as nu-funk, Brent always seems to trend set with his sounds selections, his latest podcast devoted to that “Playtime” party, indeed lifted from his live set for the outing in February at http://djbrentnicholls.com/web/2012/03/04/podcastplaytime/, symptomatic of the sound selections that should see him score a success with his set on Sunday.
Masked & Ready To Go
But no spectacle like this would be complete without a prolific P.A. performance and the team have certainly picked a big hitter to headline the party, Peyton being one of the best in the business and a towering talent that has been in considerable demand right across the globe in recent years. Indeed, he will arrive at The Masked Ball fresh from his tour of Australia, having featured large in Sydney’s Mardi Gras festival, while other destinations recently have included Brazil, Spain, Israel and, naturally, his home country of The USA. Having been born there, in North Carolina to be exact, like all good American boys, he often travels home to catch up with family & friends, although being a son of a travelling evangelist, Peyton (christened Christopher Peyton) was encouraged to develop his vocal skills from an early age within the church environment that he used to frequent with his father, he being noted as saying “…it’s not uncommon to find me singing the old time spirituals and hymns that gave my voice its starting place, and consequently its strength…”. And it is this power & strength in Peyton’s voice that has seen him score significant successes in a singing career that has spanned close on twenty years, a whole list of track releases littering his discography, although the stand-out one surely has to be “A Higher Place” which was featured in a handful of Hed Kandi album releases, one sample at http://youtube.com/watch?v=8USNazREcos a resounding reminder of just what a huge hit it was, Peyton’s connections with Hed Kandi & the then top cheese, Mark Doyle, really putting his name on the vocal and dance/clubbing scene map. But more recently Peyton has been associated with the latest international clubbing brand phenomenon that is WE, having collaborated with the clubs resident D.J./producer Carlos Gallardo on a couple of projects, “Let It Go” their latest production, this video clip at http://youtube.com/watch?v=D1rbIngNOZA, a great insight into the bond the two have formed in the studio, while we will never forget Peyton’s performance of “WE (Eloise)” at the “Attacks” party on NYD 2011, which, for us, propelled him in our books as the best in the business. So, we are expecting something quite special from him on Sunday and also hope to bring you an exclusive interview on the back of the review of “The Masked Ball”.

Having taken a break last weekend from our Best Bites & Short Shouts recommendations as we honed in on what proved to be the real highlight of London Pride 2011, The Fire Dance Stage, also wanting to concentrate on our post rather than pre-reporting, putting our much missed full length reviews back on the map, we return with our look forward to the highlights of the coming three days on the clubbing scene, picking out our choices of where to be & be seen. And having already laid out hat on two, we will share the links to those Weekend Focus posts, as well as running down what best & otherwise in Soho, Vauxhall & elsewhere.
Stylish Soho Spot
So, let’s get to it and have a look at the capital’s first & favourite gay village, rising like cream in a milk bottle being Profile & Lo-Profile (yes they’re here every week we know!) who are still very much talking the talk & walking the walk on a bar & club scene awash with also rans, Lo-Profile particularly proving an exciting alternative to our friends south of the river. And this weekend looks like being another greater starter for clubbers & socialites alike, as two Profile resident favourites return to spin some superb sounds to get you moving & grooving to the bar-tastic beats, tomorrow night (Friday 8th) seeing Nathan Six dive behind the D.J. decks, no doubt still smarting from a stellar set the previous night for social splendour Gigolo’s “Fever” foray, while on Saturday (9th), it’s the turn of scene stalwart Rob Sykes to select those supercharged sounds & slide you into the dancing dervishness of downstairs. Society Stars Set To Shine
So to Lo-Profile and the spotlight having been on Gigolo tonight (Thurs 7th), this Soho splendour having firmly established itself on the social soiree scene, tomorrow night it’s the turn of another glorious gathering with plenty of social style but a more clubbier edge to have that spotlight shone on it, “Society” reaching for the stars with two star D.J.’s of the scene, one of the biggest in the business, Steve Pitron kicking off proceedings from 10 p.m., no doubt treating us to a Beyond-esque performance full of all those adorable anthems & heavenly house hits we have come to love, while the cute yet capable Zach Burns makes its two nights in a row, returning to the Lo-Profile scene of the crime to lay down another stormer of a set that has made him one of the clubs shining new stars & very much a rising talent in our books, Zack taking over from Mr Pitron at 1 a.m. & carrying you through till the 4 a.m. finish. Then on Saturday, it’s the Beyond pre-party with one of this awesome afterhours former & one of current residents pointing you in the direction of Sunday morning & a date with Area, Hugh Stevenson starting off the night of musical magic, with D’Johnny fresh from WE parties last weekend in London & Madrid, caps off a superb session of sounds. Then it’s a case of looking forward to Sunday morning (10th July) as Beyond then stands under the post pride thank-you spotlight, serving up a special party, again to sat a big thank you from the team for making their “Super Pride” event the huge success it was, very much sending nearly all the other parties across the weekend sliding into the shade. So to our alternatives and to the hint from our post title, as Sunday afternoon & afterwards looks set to be dominated by the return of fabulous festival Summer Rites, which holds its boutique clubbing style outdoor event “Remixed” at Shoreditch Park, we having covered the devil in the detail in our Weekend Focus post “Fantastic Festival Re-Formed” (out at direct link http://discomatt.com/web/2011/07/recommends-fantastic-festival-re-formed-summer-rites-re-mixed-sunday-10th-july-weekend-focus/), the team behind this Hoxton happening very much very much praying for some sun amidst what is a spell of vey unseasonable weather, yet will be THE place to be come Sunday afternoon. So, without doubt Summer Rites “Remixed gets our alternative Best Bite vote for this weekend, the detail laid out for all to see in our focus post. However, to recap on some of the important info, please note that online tickets while still available at http://summer-rites.com priced at £20, you will need to collect these at the entry gates, while outlets Prowler & Expectations are selling too, although only have a limited stock available, so it’s worth placing a call before you visit. So, to a couple of Short Shouts to round off our Weekend recommendations & we cannot resist serving up a double dose of “Meat”, as Tom Stephan will not only be flying this magnificent meet’s flag at Summer Rites, but the night before (Sat 9th July) will be in the thick of the action at host venue, East Bloc, along with Meat men Kris Di Angelis & James Pople, while Munroe Bergdorf & Kingsley look after room two. But while this will be a Saturday storm (more details at http://eastbloc.co.uk) Sunday will see Tom & his team serve up more Meat go-go’s, more Meat comedy/twisted porn, bigger beats from Messrs Stephan & Pople & the promise of the biggest tent in the park meaning it’s time to get your fill of Meat “Two Ways”.
Our other Short Shout goes to the return of one of the alternative clubbing scene’s greatest, as “Wig Out” comes at ya this coming Saturday (9th July), oh the choice!!!, this pop institution that was forced to close when host venue Ghetto was condemned to the bulldozer to make way for Crossrail, makes a triumphant scene resurgence at the aptly named Ghetto Factory, off Aldwych, with a special performance by none other than Pete Burns, while D.J.’s on duty will include Tommy Turntables & Lady Lloyd., added to which 2-4-1 drinks from opening at 10 p.m. for the first (happy) hour & not over £2.80 afterwards is as big a draw for some as Pete is for others.

Finding ourselves on the cusp of the final weekend of the month, whilst the weather is not quite flaming as one would expect in June, it seems that the scattering of showers & unseasonal winds will be behind us as we mark the advent of alfresco antics across the capitals clubbing scene, Gay Pride next weekend followed by a succession of festivals including Summer Rites, Lovebox & SW4, although this weekend is very much the domain of Clapham as it rolls out another street party across an afternoon & evening on Saturday that should see the sun shine right through. But, that aside, there is plenty on offer to pull out the party heads this weekend, so we take a look at our choices of where to be & be seen on the scene across Soho, Vauxhall & elsewhere.
Wardour St Wow
So, to Soho first and we cannot find any other to fill our Best Bite slot than the dynamic duo that is Profile & Lo-Profile, this Wardour St spot still tipping the popularity scales, Profile proving a delight of a distraction from the marauding’s of Compton St & co, especially around lunch time (well 11 till 4 to be exact) when their 2 main courses for £10 offer kicks in, while the bargains continue between 4 & 7, when its happy hour (or is that three!?) with outstanding offers on spirits, wine & beer, plus not forgetting that the bar boasts a considerable cocktail menu for you to plough your way through. However, it is when the clock strikes 8 p.m. each Friday & Saturday that the Profile offer really ups the ante, as a host of resident D.J.’s take their turn spin the sounds & warm you into the weekend in the best possible way. And this week the team draw on two veteran residents to do just that, Brent Nicholls making a welcome return to Profile tonight (Fri 24th), while tomorrow (Sat 25th) it’s the turn of the cheeky Craig Daniels to turn up the volume & the terrific tunes heat. Splendid Soiree
Downstairs and Lo-Profile have another fun filled weekend and are still smarting from a gyrating “Gigolo” last night, this new(ish) Soho social splendour having found its feet among the competition, D.J.’ Nathan Six & Jamie Head very much flying the Lo-Profile flag not least as they are residents of both the bar upstairs & the club down. But it’s the weekend we look to and tonight’s session of “Society” which sports another two favourites of Profile that make the transition downstairs and look like packing in the party heads, Nick Evan’s uplifting & vocal beats sure to get “Society” going swimmingly, while the cute yet capable Zach Burns follows up, this young man having come of D.J.’ing age really quickly & proving himself more than equal amongst his peers. With “Society” very much being the place to be seen on the Soho scene, this should prove another successful night for the Lo-Profile team. Then on Saturday (25th ), its straight forward dynamic dancing, as D.J.’s Rob Sykes & Alessandro Londra spin the supercharged sounds, definitely making this Wardour St hangout a hot ticket, more details on the venue available at http://loprofile.com.
Now to some Short Shouts and first news that after much conjecture & delay, the team behind Freedom that bought Barcode on Archer St back in April, will be making considerable changes at the end of this month and turning the venue into a private members club. So, it seems an era in the Soho social scene is finally coming to an end, although we feel it a real shame that the departing Barcode team couldn’t see their way to throwing a farewell party, especially considering the huge amount of loyal customers that have supported it across the years. However, you can wave a fond farewell to club night Industri this coming Wednesday (29th June), more details on that coming up in our weekly round-up.
But while Barcode may be on the way out, Ku Bar is definitely still packing them in, a full weekend of party including their “D.J. Debut” night tonight (Fr1 24th), hosted by The Very Miss Dusty O, while on Sunday (25th), its Lady Lloyd’s turn to sparkle in the spotlight with her “Hit Factory” party. Back into the centre of Soho and The Shadow Lounge find themselves a week or so away from celebrating ten years in the business and have extensive refit plans ahead of the celebrations, meaning their doors will be closed for a couple of days next week. Pride Warm Up
Right onward to Vauxhall and our Best Bite goes to the Orange Group again this week, not least as they are once again treating us to another freebie, this time a Saturday night shindig at Fire, very much as a warm up for their massive Gay Pride schedule of events next weekend. So this Saturday (25th June), the team throw a special Pride warm up party in association with Ku Bar, all in aid of raising funds to help keep London’s Gay Pride free. And masterminding the music at this pre-pride party will be the might of Mikey D, Paul Heron & Leandro Kloppel turning up the heat in Fire’s main room, while the lounge will be a Ku Bar affair with the delightful DouGuim & guests spinning the sounds. Now, as we said, entry is free, but you need to be in between 11 p.m. & 1 a.m. to benefit from this outstanding offer, but it is a night in benefit of Pride, so suggested donations of £1 will be welcomed and given the fact that special drinks offers including £1 shots & £2 beers will be running throughout the night, this is a event that certainly won’t burn a hole in your pockets. However, Saturday night aside, it’s another busy weekend for all things Orange, with club nights Onyx, A:M, Later, Booster &, of course, Orange rolling out their weekly sessions, while Beyond will surely prove popular again this week, after a spectacular showing last when it joined forces with Pagano’s Deviate club & record label brand. Then tomorrow (Sat 25th), Eagle takes on a “Carpet Burn” feel with promoter Martyn Fitzgerald headlining a guest list of D.J.’s & performers, while “Horse Meat Disco” is sure to pack them in again this Sunday (26th). Now, the venerable institution that is The Royal Vauxhall Tavern (The RVT) roll out three classics this weekend, the magnificent “Marvellous” back for more tonight (Fri 24th), with D.J. duo Jonny Slut & Dawn Right Nasty serving up a mix of punk, soul, disco & rock rhythms & with Joan Dairy Queen hosting, while on Saturday (25th) Amy Lame is back with the iconic “Duckie”, no weekend being complete without a full-on onslaught of The Dame Edna Experience at “S.L.A.G.S./Chill-out” on Sunday (26th). Alfresco Antics
So to our alternatives and as we hinted at the top of this Recommends report, the attention goes all alfresco for the next few weeks, this coming weekend no exception as The Clapham Street Party takes centre stage tomorrow (Sat 25th)and with the forecast looking quite healthy for, at least, a dry & sunny day if not quite the smeltering Sunday we are expecting, SW4 should see swarms of street party heads make their way down to Edgerley Road, where, if last year is anything to go by, they will be faced with a street bursting at the seams, everyone clamouring to get close to the stage to see a succession of cabaret artists, drag queens & singers perform from the 3 p.m. start through until a dusky 9 p.m. end. And with a line-up that includes Sandra, Rose Garden, Lola Lasagne, Lizzie Drip, Maisie Trollette & Dave Lynn, it will definitely be one for drag queen fans, but with the action actually starting a little earlier than that, as host venue Kazbar opens its doors a 1 p.m., with a list of D.J.’s as long as our arm playing plenty of pop & disco to delight, while the cocktails, Pimms & other refreshments will be flowing from both the bars inside & out. However, this community event, which has slowly grown in stature & is now in its 7th year is also very much about giving, as it supports charity causes The Albert Kennedy & The Eddie Surman Trusts, two HIV causes very close to our hearts, meaning we cannot re-enforce the minimum donation of £1, hoping you will dig even deeper into your pockets, especially given all the exceptional entertainment coming your way for free. Now to some Short Shouts and firstly we have to report that due to issues with inbound guest stars from The States, Circus, which was due to take place tonight (Fri 24th)has had to be postponed. While the team could have found stand-in replacements for Kazaky, who were to headline this hedonistic happening, both Jodie Harsh & Kris Di Angelis agreed that they would prefer to re-schedule in order to get Kazaky across, especially given this will be an extra special party at the super swish Cafe De Paris. So, keep your eyes peeled right here for news on the re-schedule, which as soon as we hear, you will too.
Next up and an alternative spot that sports two new nights in one weekend, The Dalston Superstore never failing to push the envelope of extravertism, especially with “Breed” tonight (Fr 24th) with promoter Rex The Dog introducing two new stars to the scene, Ruff US & Bambi sure to create a Superstore stir, while on Saturday (25th), “Sexy Dogs” welcome the likes of D.J.’s Hunee, Rik Moran & Ian Robinson, serving up synth pop & nu disco, the weekend rounding off with another “Tutti Frutti” Squeaky session. Our final Short Shout goes to East Bloc who have a real hum dinger of a happening this Saturday (25th June), as the superb S.O.S. returns to its regular monthly slot and this month runs a “Divas To The Dancefloor Party” with a D.J. line up that picks the cream of the alternative scene, Jim Warboy & Andy Blake masterminding the main room music but joined by special guest Tasty Tim, while Jack France makes his rubberised clad debut in room two. With the fabulous “Disco Fag Bar” also back tonight (Fr1 24th), East Bloc is the Shoreditch showstopper for sure and well worth a visit, as is their website http://eastbloc.co.uk.
Right that’s just about it for us for another weekend and one that will see us resting our still fragile & repairing bones, so as to make sure we are fighting fit for London’s massive Gay Pride, although we get the sneaking suspicion that Beyond may be beckoning, as long as we take it nice & easy. With the days of February coming & going quicker than we could say month 28 times, March is already steaming along at break neck speed, although up to now we have been engrossed in South Africa & Cape Town particularly, plenty of extracurricular duties precluding us from devoting time to our writing duties. Yet as amazing as Cape Town was, there was a force blocking us from getting our writing head on, but as we find ourselves into our second full day back in London and back at our creative best, we thought it high time to come back up to music speed. Indeed, since our last newsletter in January, there is now a mass of music to share, so in this first of three posts, this one aptly called, “Catalogue Of Compilations To Choose”, we cast you back to Jan/Feb releases before forging into the month of March.
So let’s crack on and take you back to Lovechild’s birthday which took place on Sat 12th Feb and brought to the London fore, two Berlin based boys as guest D.J.’s for the night, the first being Chris Bekker , who arrived on a high, as his track “Upgrade” was not only getting loads of dancefloor attention across Europe, but had just been given the remix treatment by Steven Redant & Lenz Garcia, and featured large in his storming set in Fire’s main room that night. Plus, with it being Chris’ birthday tomorrow (at 19th March), his inclusion here seems all the more approriate, so many happy returns Chris, keep up the magnificent music.
The other Berlin based boy was, of course, Eduardo De La Torre, a face familiar to the London scene, not least as he used to live & work here. Jetting across from his latest home last month saw him mark the occasion with a special compilation release dedicated to Lovechild’s “The Birthday” event, and was definitely, as he explained at the time, “…a taste of what you guys will get on Saturday…” With 56 minutes of Mr De La Torre in terrific tech house & euro beat mood, with lots of vocals to inject the sort of vitality that is stand out in his sets, this marvellous mix that is well worth adding to your collection is still available at http://soundcloud.com/dj-edu-de-la-torre/lovechild-the-second-birthday, while like Chris, we have more music of Edu’s to share in our forthcoming newsletter, so watch out for that.
Just before we head away from Lovechild for this music devotion, another talent that caught our eye & impressed at “The Birthday” event was D.J. Isavin, a Romanian born but now London based boy who was spotted & scouted by the clubs promoter Alex Erfan and who made his mark pretty much immediately, the second Saturday of this February being no exception. With a rousing performance that set the standard for this celebratory event, if you happened to miss out on his superb showing, then you can do no wrong by checking out his specially devoted podcast which is still available at http://isavin.podomatic.com/ and watch this space for a special focus on this talent who will be centre stage in Area for this month’s Lovechild event tomorrow (19th March).
Now, moving on and to a terrific talent who all too often slips under our radar yet, having entertained us enthrallingly for many years now, it’s high time this our “Super Swede” got some attention. Per QX is a name synonymous with the scene in London, not least for being an intrinsic link in the way out & whacky Gutterslut, an East End based club that has his style written all over it. Yet aside from club promoting, there are many strings to Per’s bow, his studio production works one of the strongest, a whole raft of track releases catching our eye, the most notable being “Blow My Trumpet” which made it big last year. However, of the many that have passed our eyes recently, the one that gets a shout here is his remix of Daniel Bovie & Roxy Rox’s “My Destiny”, which gets the Per electro/tech twisted treatment and is featured on his compilation “Only For DJ’s Magazine Mix”, both the track & the mix available by going to http://soundcloud.com/perqx/. But like the trio before, there is more from this pint sized producer coming in our next music delectation, a Gutterslut birthday mix no less.
Now to someone who is from a similar mould to Per, not least as he is also East End based, but another guy that has been entertaining us for years and just last night was an incredible host at the resplendently superb Room Service. But like Mr QX, Mr Di Angelis is just as accomplished in the studio as he is out there promoting on the club scene, promotion which includes Circus & new kid on the block “Meat (excuse the pun), while that recording work includes a long list of original productions, set compilations and remix works that are all fabulously electro tainted house music monsters. However, we particularly like his work with Ben Dobe and their “Making Love” track, a re-work of the Phyllis Nelson classic “Move Closer” & is a corker so well worth a listen at http://soundcloud.com/krisdiangelis/sets in the “original productions” section, while there are plenty more mixes & comps to choose from, all of which will please for sure. Plus, watch this space for news on studio works from Kris in collaboration with the mighty Tom Stephan aka Superchumbo.
Next up is yet another scene favourite that has been rocking our boat for years, from Crash through to Beyond and plenty more in-between, recent showings at clubs like later, Lo-profile and even WE party confirming him as one of those delightful D.J.’s that make it high in our rank of all time greats. Jamie Head certainly knows how to cut a considerable stride in music terms, often nodding to the more experimental sounds that push the boundaries & break from the norm, although his WE party devoted podcast filled our ears in our Euro mini tour prior to heading off to South Africa. However, having completed his first podcast ever, we thought our calls for a follow up would not fall on deaf ears, his cutely called “Tech Head” mix, much more in the Jamie style that makes him a hit in the Terrace room at Beyond and is so deserving of a shout here, it, like the former, having made our collection and should yours too by going to http://soundcloud.com/jamie-head, while for the WE party mix, go get it at http://jamiehead2.podomatic.com.
Now to another Jamie, this time Mr Hammond, who continues to carve his own niche in & around the scene, both in London & internationally, Muccassassina in Rome being a regular port of call away from home. With Monday nighther Popcorn still on his schedule here in the capital, recent shakeup’s at Onyx (many we don’t approve of) have seen him being overlooked, although he always entertained us there and is, for us, a force to be reckoned with. So, given that, its comes as no surprise that we find our way to mention him here and a compilation which was pressed at the end of January and explained as one “…made for my gym workouts…” and is a departure from his usual progressive beats, rather a nod to the matinee style, with vocals & euro beats a-plenty. Aptly titled “Matinee Style House”, this is one that found immediate favour with us and will surely you too, especially given the inclusion of a Madonna remix (no need to hang your head in shame Jamie), so is well worth grabbing at http://d-jamie.podomatic.com/ while is usual style of mix for March is also now out.
Neatly dovetailing in is another talent that features large at Muccassasina yet is a true globe trotter, having spent the last few weeks over in Mexico & the Brazil wowing the audiences there with his barnstorming beats & equally appealing good looks. Danny Verde, has in the twenty four months or so he has been on the international D.J. circuit has certainly made a name for himself and has gained scores of followers, although his true pedigree lies in his studio work, with tracks like “Pushin To The Top”, “Express Yourself”, “Open Your Heart” & “Let Me See Your Underwear” just four of a long list of releases from his hallowed Holab turf, while the odd full compilation here & there helps remind us of just what a talent he is, not to mention a damn good friend too. So, with his latest offering which was made for the club of the same name, “Love In Traffic” showcases many of those tracks we mentioned, plus a new(ish) remix with Hector Fonseca of Katy Perry’s smash “Peacock” and made our iPod playlist as soon as we got drift of this 60 minute marvel, which should be filling yours too by going to http://dannyverde.podomatic.com/, while there is much more to come in our next newsletter as he has been busy on a number of new track projects which we want to share.
Now we just want to rattle off a few brief mentions before we bow out with a biggie and a long overdue podcast producer, but more on that in a min. First let’s give mention to new compilations from German based Aussie Mike Kelly of Sorry Shoes fame, who has laid down three “live” mixes, each with two part’s, so well over 6 hours of music and all done in February too. Then another well known name has been busy compiling too, Rob Sykes having served up three podcasts in just over a week, “Happy Horny Guy”, “Beyond Live” & “Dance And Sing, Get Up And Do Your Thing”, all full of vocal thrillers, while it was his “Let Me Tell You Something Deep” offering that was destined to get the proper mention, as like he explains “…it’s really deep & sexy…” and, yes, we do love it as much as you do Rob, and we are sure you will too, taking your choice of his four at http://djrobsykes.podomatic.com/. Then to complete the trio of short shouts, enter stage left Zach Burns, whom we caught up with briefly before we headed off to South Africa and has been a busy bee with no less than three comps out while we have been away, one his regular monthly edition, while to mark his appearance of The Circuit Party pre-party in Brighton on 1st April, as well as his showing at Lo-Profile on 4th March, there are two others to add to this mention, all three available at http://djburns.podomatic.com/.
Right, well that now just leaves us with our final and very special entrant, one we have been itching to include for a while, Gaydar’s own Phil Marriott having been the lynch pin in our Friday frolics down at Profile for much of last year, while its all change this, perhaps giving him the nudge he needed to get those podcasts recorded. That said, it seems, unbeknownst to us, he did record one back in September last year for Onyx, another club he has played for away from the radio. However, it is this year we are concentrating on and one which for our Mr Phil is full of change & promise, gigs at both gay & straight venue’s keeping his live performances fresh, while the is exciting news on the ClubNation front, a live house music mix show he used to beam live from Profile each Friday, but gets a brand new look from tonight (Fri 19th March). But we digress from this equally exciting podcast news, his February offering posted while we were away sunning ourselves, yet is equally as sunny in its make-up with some scorching sounds, not least the Bills & Hurr Mix of Erick Morillio’s “Live Your Life”, Roger Sanchez’s “2gether” which is given the Pitron & Sanna mix treatment, as well as the Alesso mix of Therese’s “Drop It Like It’s Hot”, three smoulders in amongst 13 tip top tracks in a collection worthy of yours and available at http://djphilmarriott.podomatic.com/. Now, Mr Marriott is a busy bee right now with this new ClubNation show, but has promised us a full up-date and maybe a trip down to Gaydar Towers to see it all in action, so we will bring you news of that as soon as.
So, that kind of begins to fill the February gap of music left in our wake while we swanned around in South Africa, although there is much more to come to get us & you right up to date, not least new compilation releases from the mighty Steve Pitron & Brent Nicholls, along with inclusions for Hifi Sean, Alan X & Jonny M. Plus, with devotions to works from Spaniards Javier Medina & Ivan Gomez, as well as step re-traces on Mike Kelly & Danny Verde and special inclusions for Leomeo & Guy Scheiman, we aiming to bring you all this & more within the next day or so, in what will be the second of three newsletters this month, this upcoming one entitled “March Wind Of Wonderful Music”. And don’t forget that both Chris Bekker & Eduardo De La Torre will get a further shout, planned for our third newsletter, “Three’s Company”, later this month.

With life over the last few weeks being topsy turvy to say the least, while we have been holding our own with both reviews & preview (weekend) posts, our much beloved Music Is The Answer reports have taken a back step. But with there being a relentless amount of new music out there, we thought we would get back into gear with not one, but two D.M. Does The News posts, this one concentrating on U.K. based talents and their latest compilations, tracks or simply just news on forthcoming gigs. So, sit back as we rifle through a veritable feast of D.J.’s & their work, giving the all important links to spectacular new sounds, as well as linking into other reports of ours.
Right, so we kick off very much with a Beyond theme, especially given just how good last weekend’s Japanese inspired bash was, “Tokyo” probably our best this year yet in so many ways, although the music did much of the talking, not least from the main floor boys of Steve Pitron, Mikey D & Alan K. Turning to the D.J’s and first Steve Pitron, his set was full of amazing Beyond anthems as well as tunes from his “Summer 2010” which we still cannot put down, so simply can’t resist mentioning it again as it will certainly be vying for top spot in our year end compilation round up. While we are waiting for a follow up from Steve, he remains busy in the studio with production partner Max Sanna, their latest a pure gem of a remix of Robyn’s single “Indestructible”, which also made his set on Sunday & is well worth grabbing at http://soundcloud.com/maxsanna/sets/robyn-indestructible-max-sanna-steve-pitron-remix. Plus, with Steve’s birthday round the corner, what better way to wish him many happy returns with the first mention here.
Right onto Mikey D, who has also recently released a smashing compilation, “Lose Control” right up there in our rankings & filling our ears virtually every day. Seeing & hearing him performance at Beyond “Tokyo” was like sitting right in this magnificent mix, which has 14 truly amazing tracks on it, virtually all making his set on Sunday, fan-flaming-tastic. So, you just have to grab this compilation which (yes we know) we have mentioned a few times already. Onto Alan K and never have we seen a D.J. with so much effervescent energy behind the decks, he especially coming into his own at Beyond. Having flown the flag for the club in Greece, Holland & France over the summer, we were so pleased to see him last Sunday and savour the majority of his set (we tried to leave twice but couldn’t tear ourselves away), so are as pleased as punch that he has laid down a compilation marking his prolific performance at “Tokyo” on Sunday morning. This amazing mix truly transfixed us from start to finish, as did his set, so we cannot recommend it enough, which you can play & download at http://djalank.podomatic.com.
Now, before we leave the Beyond subject, Hifi Sean gets his own look in, his pulsating performance in the Terrace room truly magical, especially given he had literally landed straight into “Tokyo” from Athens. We referred to his showing as “Sushi Sounds Sean Style”, although he preferred the phrase “teriyaki tech”, the word tech very much the vogue come R.A.W.’s 4th birthday at Orange in a few short hours, Sean having laid down a special mix to mark the occasion, he being very much in the thick of the action. Plus, hot off the press is his latest monthly “hifi-cast” as well as the second in his “Chill” series, all three marvellous mixes available at http://hifiseandj.podomatic.com.
Onward and linking into Nick Tcherniak, who has been a very busy boy indeed, having had a spell out in Spain, in the recording studio with production partner Steve Thomas, the duo still riding high on the back of both “My People” & “Deep Water”, the latter’s remix package still at number one in a host of download charts, Hifi Sean’s mix a particular favourite of ours. Add to that his new EP, “The Answer” featuring vocal from Lizzie France, which has started promo just this week and there is no question Nick is riding high at the moment, he even having had time to lay down two podcasts following his appearances at Matinee & SuperMartXe, both including “The Answer” & the Matinee mix also featuring “Deep Water” & Alan X’s stunning remix of “My People. Talking of SuperMartXe, Tony English is certainly getting in on the act recently, having starred at the last two parties, as well as playing at Logan Schmitz’s home-grown brand, Hype, back on August Bank Holiday. That apart & he plays for both Lovechild & Puscha in London, as well as connecting with a host of European D.J.’s through his weekly Saturday radio show on Push.FM, which he compresses into monthly podcasts in a series of “Social” releases, that latest featuring WE & Cafe Ole resident Danny Leblack. Tony always manages to dig deep & find a whole host of hits making it big on the continent, so these podcasts are certainly worth a listen, which you can do so at http://tonyenglish.podomatic.com, the man also about to release his SuperMartXe “Porno Star” mix, due out tomorrow.
Now, while we are in Logan mode, lets fire through some mixes you should go grab, the Logan presents podcast page worth a look at http://loganpresentspodcast.podomatic.com, the latest edition put together by Tony English, while Matinee’s Michel Mizrahi has also been busy in the studio, his latest “Autumn Beats” mix a fabulous 114 minutes of mixes well worth tapping into at http://soundcloud.com/michel-mizrahi. Right, switching alliances a little, we head in the direction of Lovechild & a band of residents that have been busy recording, the terrific Terry Vietheer having popped up here there & everywhere recently, his Lovechild mix now fourth in-line with more later releases that include compilations for B2B & Barcode, while he has a new track out too, “East Village” having been released just two days ago & is a corker. But Lovechild also have their own podcast site, various D.J.’s taking turns to add their own stamp to the growing series, the latest coming from Gabriele Cutrano who performed perfectly at “Lovechild Meets Delice” at the end of September, this mix very much evoking his superb set, which is well worth checking out at http://lovechildclub.podomatic.com.
But the Lovechild story continues, as resident Alessandro Londra has very much been flying the flag for the brand overseas recently, a tour of Australia a couple of weeks ago, immediately followed by Amsterdam last Saturday and our hard working bello is literally on his way back from Istanbul, where he was representing & promoting Alex Erfan’s outfit at The Otherside club. Yet, having clocked up well over 20,000 air miles in three weeks, he has still managed to lay down a compilation, which was handed out on CD at the party last night, but is also available at http://lovechildclub.podomatic.com.
Now, another Lovechild resident has been feverishly busy in the studio of late, not to mention lauding it around London at a vast array of clubs, from TTD to Hotwired, Hard-On to Sweat, Lo-Profile to Barcode, even making a stunning show at The Week back in September when we were glued to the Latin Lounge for close on three hours. Add to that his web work for SeenQueen & the launch of new social networking site MyGayFace (MGF) and Brent Nicholls just doesn’t know how or when to stop. And he doesn’t stand still in music terms either, three mixes having been released in just over a month, dedications to Hard On’s! 7th birthday & new club T.T.D. two great mixes, although for us, can’t quite match the magic of his “Get On MyGayFace” compilation, which is knocking on the door for top spot in our 2010 chart. Right, we are nearly there, but before we finish up, coming back full circle (ish), quick mentions go to Norbert M who made his A:M debut yesterday morning, having triumphed in a recent D.J. competition at Heaven’s club night Popcorn, his latest podcast very much a reflection of his performance which you can grab at http://norbertmik.podomatic.com, while Popcorn resident Jamie Hammond has just issued his own latest mix “Live Set 08/10” which we think is his best yet, so well worth a listen at http://d-jamie.podomatic.com. Now, sadly, we missed out on The Wig Party last Sunday, but heard it was amazing, Rob Sykes certainly making an impact at both the main event at Cafe de Paris & the afterparty in Area, although it was the after afterparty where he laid down his latest mix in front of friends & family, so is rather special & worth checking out at http://djrobsykes.podomatic.com.
So what was this full circle we were referring to? Well, we started with Beyond & we finish with a Beyond resident, but someone who will be an intrinsic ingredient at R.A.W.’s 4th birthday later tonight, being the lynch pin in the duo that started it all in 2006. Now, he may have proclaimed that Tony De Vit is his greatest D.J. of all time, but Gonzalo Rivas has to be right up there for so many people too. To say his career is littered with plaudits is an understatement and he has featured in some of the biggest parties & club brands around. With yet another birthday (the big one) just around the corner, Gonzalo is definitely in the mood to celebrate, so has, along with Hifi Sean, laid down a new compilation especially for R.A.W’s anniversary which is truly awesome, although we know the Trade one (currently in the making) will be just as good, if not better. Plus, his A;M blast from the past mix is classic Gonzalo too, so while he may be last in our post he is far from least in our estimation, meaning that both mixes are in our collection and should be in yours too, so don’t delay, get downloading at http://gonzalorivas.podomatic.com.

Postscript
We started this post with a flavour of Beyond and we simply had to share yet another amazing experience, courtesy of two incredible individuals that went that extra mile with us this morning in Area.
Not only have we known him for close on 14 years now, but the musical journey Steve Pitron has taken us on is immense, a whole variety of clubs & events touching our lives where Steve has been involved. But, we were simply blown away by his comradeship this morning in Beyond, so much so we once again witnessed 2 hours of Pitron perfection in a set that included every anthem you could wish for. The man is genius and words cannot describe just how much, our best way to show appreciation of his art is to dance “…in our spot…” knowing that the man knows we are there and, in the words of one anthem, “…let the music pump right through me I can feel it in my bones…” & “…come on now show me pretty ladies how you really like to dance…” as in Steve’s hands do we dance or what.
Then, as if our morning wasn’t special enough, were in for a treat or what when Alan K invited us behind the D.J. booth where we witnessed this multi mixing maestro in full flow. His euphoric interpretations of records like “Release Me” (lyrics extracts above) & “Underground” are amazing from the dancefloor, but when you witness him waving his magical wand over them first hand, it is a glorious sight to behold. The energy he develops & what comes back from the crowd is truly remarkable and grovel in gratification of his, another genius in our eyes.
What more is there to say, apart from Beyond should always include an S, a P, an A & a K. You guys are awesome and we are so lucky to know you.
