Well, it’s been a long time coming, but Disco Matt gets back into the D.J. groove with the first in a regular release of focuses, this one looking at marvellous Milano man Marco Gee. With a detailed picture of his production pedigree, along with links a-plenty to both podcasts & tracks, see why we rate this impressive individual we way we do.

Marvellous Milano Man

Born in Piacenza, not far from the Italian city of Milan, D.J./Producer Marco Gee found himself within an extremely creative environment to follow his passion, namely house music and at the tender age of 14, developed his own home-grown studio which allowed him to experiment with all sorts of sounds, nurturing the creative elements that would prove valuable in years to come. As a result, Marco soon started D.J.’ing for a string of local clubs & radio stations, while his studio productions remained the real drive, this leading to his first big break in 1992 when he teamed up with fellow Italian, Massimo Paramour & music label Media Records, the latter exposing Mr Gee to some of biggest names in Italian house music of the time, including Cappella, Tito Puente & Zietia Messiah & the band, the 49’ers. However, despite the advances Marco was making within the Italian music scene, he saw London as a much richer playing field, upping sticks & pursuing his career in sound engineering while sinking into the vibrant clubbing scene that was emerging at the time. With pioneering clubs like Crash, Salvation, DTPM & Trade, the inspiration for Marco to further experiment in the studio, London was where he would evolve his style from the distinct 90’s dance music that was a feature of his earlier productions, towards more elaborate blends, genre styles extending into deep & tech, progressive & funky house.

Then, in 2006, Marco was given the incredible opportunity of collaborating with fellow Italian & long time friend, Francesco Pagano, a marriage of musical minds that would not only produce the track “My Body And My Soul” but would see Marco appointed to the record label & clubbing umbrella created by Pagano, namely Deviate. The following year marked a whole raft of house classic adaptations coming out of the Marco Gee recording studio, including Deux’s “Sun Rising Up”, Ce Ce Peniston’s “Finally” & the David Morales hit “How Would You Feel”, while artists such as Stonebridge, Dayeene, & Lonnie Gordon were other features in his work, 2007 also seeing further collaborations with Pagano and with London D.J./producer figurehead Alan X, these crowning a year that saw well over a dozen track productions to Marco’s name. The same year would see Marco head hunted & commissioned by MTV to produce an short track for an online advertisement for sports brand Adidas, one which was taken up my this global brand in Germany and is one among a number of notable Marco achievements. With his productions released on labels such as Almighty, Champion & Stoney Boy, 2008 would mark Marco’s biggest production project to date, his collaboration with De’lacy producing the massive hit, “Bodyswerve”, one which Champion records snapped up, while its release on iTunes made the track go truly global., becoming an iconic house music hit that scored successive inclusions in D.J.’s performances, as well as receiving major airplay on radio stations around the world.

So, having firmly established a reputation in the recording studio, the natural progression for Marco was to break out onto the clubbing scene as a D.J., his associations on the capital’s circuit opening up opportunities for Marco to play for brands Barcode & Lovechild, his debut set at the latter in March 2011 receiving rave reviews. This then produced further guest & resident spots, including Profile/Lo-Profile and more recently, alternative club event Deviate, which re-affirmed the long standing working relationship with one Francesco Pagano, while Lovechild was also to play host to the launch of Marco’s latest production, “Get It On” with artist Shockolady in October 2011. With Marco still very much linked with Lovechild, as well as off-shoot “Superlovers”, his D.J.ing has inspired a series of podcasts, while 2012 has started on a fabulous foot for him, a further collaboration with De’lacy on the cards, while his “Lovechild” mix of Stacey Jackson’s “Is This Love” is set for release on Run Boy Records. Add to that scheduled showings for his Deviate & Lovechild residencies, as well as guest appearances for a handful of other brands, Marco is definitely on the up & up and looking forward to a year packed with new opportunities & developments.

Prolific Producer

So what of those productions & podcasts, Well, with a discography that extends to over 20 release since 2006 alone, there is much to chew over, stand-out singles including his vocal mix of The Sphinx track “What Hope Have I”, his remix of Dayeene’s hit “And It Hurts”,  along with Cluedup’s “Music is My Life” and 7^th Heaven’s “Music” all 2007 releases but still available via Beatport at http://beatport.com/artist/marco-gee/18178/tracks. Then there was the massive track “How Did You Know” which he produced & featured the vocals of Mar-shine, released in 2008 on the Big In Ibiza label, which was neatly followed by that huge “Bodyswerve” collaboration with De’Lacy, Soulshaker in tern giving it their own interpretation and one you can catch at http://youtube.com/watch?v=CBe08MUrhyo. But the tracks have continued, remixes of Pagano’s “Drama On The Dancefloor” being released on Kult records in 2010, while teaming up with Shocklady and her track “Get It On”, the official video release at http://youtube.com/watch?v=X-Gr2AN0qm8, saw Marco produce a specially commissioned Lovechild mix which was performed at the clubs re-launch at Pulse in October 2011 and features on his podcast devoted to the event, which you can download via http://marcogee.podomatic.com/entry/2011-10-24T13_02_50-07_00.

And that neatly moves onto his podcast productions, of which there are plenty to choose from over & above that Lovechild “The Big Blue” devotion, Marco having laid down no less than nine production’s during 2011, a pressing from his performance at Deviate in June among a list of others, one marking his set for “Superlovers” in September. But with that rave review set from Lovechild “Muscle” in March included on his podcast page, there is much more to choose from, Mr Gee dipping into deep house with his May podcast, while summer anthems and big room mixes feature in his other captivating compilations. Currently culminating in his latest release this month, Marco explains of his “Gold – Volume 9” podcast, “…like all of my sets, it’s a crescendo of energy, starting a little minimal but then quickly turning into full blown tech house with a touch of electro…”, adding that “…this is the first of a new line of podcasts with a distinctive sound…” very much reflecting his Deviate rather than his Lovechild style, although with such a variety available on his podcast page at http://marcogee.podomatic.com/, we are pretty much spoilt for choice.

So, having delved deep into the life, the music & the achievements of this marvellous Milano man, there is no doubt in our minds that terrific talent that is Marco Gee is one of the production world greats, while we are sure his is a name that will feature more & more on the capital’s clubbing circuit in 2012 and beyond.
