Despite launching close on two years ago now and to considerable fanfare at that, making it down to Gay City Rollers was always a challenge for us, not least as the Wednesday night timing was tricky given work commitments, although some would say that was a pretty lame excuse as it was never planned to be a late event, the 7 pm till midnight giving us plenty of opportunity to get home in time for work the following day. Indeed, Gay City Rollers (GCR) wasn’t & isn’t anything like the cavorting clubbing we are used to, the whole event being much more of a social gathering where the central theme of roller skating brings together a fun filled & cosmopolitan crowd that are all up the for same thing, socialising, fun and yes, roller skating, but to some of the best disco music around.  And by jove did we have some fun when we hit host venue The Renaissance Rooms on Wednesday 3rd of March for GCR’s 1st Birthday Bash, we naturally putting review pen to paper which you can still catch via direct link http://discomatt.blogspot.com/2010/03/dancing-on-wheels-gay-city-rollers-1st.html, our reflection hopefully giving you a feel for the formula and an indication of just what a fun night out it is.

Now you may be asking, what happened after the 1st Birthday?, well due to commitments of the venue, The Renaissance Rooms and also GCR’s promoter, one Alex Erfan (of Lovechild, As One, Hustlaball etc, etc, etc fame!), unfortunately this Xanadu style night of roller disco was put into hibernation, although such was the following, admittedly a little niche, and such was the cries for GCR to return, that Mr Erfan entered into negations with the host venue to re-instigate the night. And in doing so, not only will Gay City Rollers return to what is undoubtedly THE best equipped venue to host this prolific party, but Alex has secured a Sunday evening for the event (yes we know it’s a school day the following day), a much better fit in our books, so as a result pretty much guaranteeing a resoundingly rapturous response. Plus, thirteen months since GCR was out to bed, this roller skating splendour will be taking the opportunity to celebrate its return in style, with a 2nd birthday bash with a splash.

So with the scene well and truly set, let’s delve into the detail of this kitsch & cult alternative clubbing night of “dancing on wheels” and first up is the music, which couldn’t be more disco tipped delight if you dreamt of it, as Alex has secured two of the best in the business to rev up the rhythms with old time classics intermixed with more modern movers, both The Very Miss Dusty O & Stewart Who, GCR favourites and the perfect duo to get you up on your four wheeled feet and spinning around (ooh isn’t that a Kylie song) The Renaissance Room’s specially prepared ring (is there a brown girl in?!?!) with disco dance crazy tunes right through the night. Then there is the Gaydar influence, probably the biggest brand in gaydome having joined forces with Alex to promote & support the event, so expect plenty of Gaydar giveaways on the night. Add to that the inclusion of the cute Ku-Bar Boys in their tight hot pants & leg warmers and the eye candy will be present for all to see, in true Gay City Rollers style of course.

Now to the all important info and Gay Coty Rollers “2nd Birthday” takes place this coming Sunday (10th April) at the Renaissance Rooms in Vauxhall, the event kicking off at the revised starting time of 6 p.m. and running through to a workday friendly 11 p.m. Entrance before 7 p.m. is a mere £8, although rises to £12.50 thereafter, although both prices include a free drink & the roller skate hire with more info on the event & the venue available by going to either http://gaycityrollers.com or to http://alexerfan.com.

So, what better excuse for some roller disco delight could you want, we will certainly be there to report on it all, no, doubt like at the 1st Birthday bash, falling arse over tip in heavenly hilarity, meaning that a night of disco dancing on four wheels couldn’t be a better fit, leaving us to say…”Go There! Be There! (DISCO MATT)

About discomatt

The History........................................................Created in 2008 after a short period of blogging under his real name, the pseudonym, “Disco Matt”, was born on the back of a reputation for being London’s original party boy having partied and clubbed across the London gay scene since in mid 1990’s.........................................................Through his series of blogs via individual blogging pages which soon morphed into a full blown website (http://discomatt.com), Disco Matt established himself as an independent journalist come columnist who quickly gained a reputation for supporting & promoting one of the world’s most prolific clubbing scenes. He previewed, reviewed & recommended London gay clubs, as well as the diverse gay/metrosexual London club/bar culture, linking to & reviewing the scene top D.J.’s and generally covering the gay scene including international gay events....................................................Regularly reporting on the top events across the scene, Disco Matt’s reviews, over the years, developed a strong following, not just by clubbers, D.J’s, promoters, music producers & scene faces, but people far and wide that were looking for an insight to the incredible scene that was London. He also previewed upcoming events that signalled, either a major change or update of existing clubs, new ventures on the gAylist/metrosexual scene, or where he considered events that deserved more comprehensive coverage to that provided in other posts.............................................However, having pretty much reached the top of his game in his chosen specific field, due to a number of personal predicaments, challenges & changes in his life priorities, Disco Matt parked his writing and operation in February 2014. While the burning desire to continue remained, what this much needed period of inactivity did provide was the time & space to re-think & re-focus his activities on a broader spectrum of media and entertainment............................................................So, following this long two year lay-off, he built up the foundations for this diversification into the areas of film, theatre, radio & television where his reviewing, recommending & reporting was to be replicated & resurrected, also pointing his promotions through more visuals & video's linked to all these areas along with his core activities and passions ................................................................................The Present....................................After another (shorter) period of lay-off from mid 2016, a life changing event reignited his passion and early into 2017, Disco Matt has delivered on his promise for a new, more modern look to his website, shedding the old & tired skin in favour of something far more in keeping with the times and with his blogging roots. And he has waived a fond farewell to his clubbing days, this having also been ditched from his site & activity, rather now just focussing on the genres of film, theatre, radio, television, video and of course, music, in so doing, aiming to broaden his appeal to a much wider audience interested in the latest most cutting edge areas of media & entertainment.............................................................................His aim is to be highly regarded across the industry for his writing in these fields and ultimately become a full time critic in film &/or theatre.
