We can hardly believe just how quickly Easter has arrived and we find ourselves having just about recovered from five days of partying with the drop dead gorgeous Delice boys at their delightful “Dream Festival” in Barcelona, about to repeat the affair with a hectic weekend of activity across London’s clubland. So, in a slight departure from our usual format, plus given the amount of parties on to tempt you out across this extended weekend, we take a bite sized look at what’s on offer across Soho, Vauxhall & elsewhere, day by day, pointing you to websites & event pages, yet giving you our choice picks of where to be & be seen on the scene.
So, let’s crack on and look at Soho first, our Best Bite going to Profile & Lo-Profile, the Wardour Street combo that is very much THE place to escape from the madding crowds on Soho’s streets as the gorge Easter weather looks like filling our favourite gay village to capacity. And Profile will be in pole position to serve those thirsty boys & girls as the cool down from the heat of the day, although resident D.J. Craig Daniels will surely keep temperatures rising with a truck load of terrific tunes tonight (Fri 22nd Apr), while Jamie Head will be masterminding the music tomorrow (Sat 23rd), both kicking off proceedings from 8 p.m., while the bar’s happy hour from 4 till 7 remains a delightful daily draw, as is the new food menu that looks fantastic. More details on Profile can be found by going to http://profilesho.com.
Moving downstairs and Lo-Profile continues to soar in the popularity stakes, their new night “Society” launching to critical acclaim last Friday and returning this with the dynamic duo that is Nick Evans & Paul Heron, Nick getting this social cum clubbing splendour off to a dance-tastic start from 10 p.m., while Mr Heron’s heaps of heavenly house kick in from 1 a.m., the two surely to pack out the place from start to finish. Then on Saturday the action will be as hot as the music as Nathan Six & D’Johnny serve up the sizzling sounds, Nathan on first & then Johnny carries you cavorting into the early hours & a date with beyond, Lo-Profile being the “official” pre-party for this awesome afterhours audacity. For further info on this hip hop Soho hangout, go to http://loprofile.com.
So to our Soho short shouts and first up is The Shadow Lounge who have a weekend full of eggtravagant events, the winning Friday formula of “Therapy”, followed by “Inferno” on Saturday & the return of Steve Elliot’s (of Salvation fame) “Scandal on Sunday. With D.J.’s on duty that include Mis-White, Mix, Andrew Elmore, Paul Coals & more, check out http://theshadowlounge.co.uk for more details.
Next up is Rupert Street, the Soho sophisiticate that is sure to pack a punch this extended weekend, as it sports the most extensive outside space of any venue in this tight nit West End hotspot, but with a fantastic threesome of delightful D.J.’s across the 3 days, the music should pull in the punters too, Brent Nicholls funking up the frolicking on Friday, while Paul heron hones the house on Saturday, Sicilian splendour Alessandro elevating the atmosphere on Sunday. More details on Rupert St can be found by going to http://rupertstreet.com.
Our third & final Short Shout goes to award winning Ku-Bar on Lisle St who focus in on St George’s Day tomorrow (Sat 23rd Apr) with a special party headlined by D.J.’s P & Shariff, while the cute Ku Bar boys sort just an aptly place St George flag to help celebrate England’s national day, the backdrop of pop & chart topping tunes sure to fulfil the fancies of the young party crowd the bar & club always attracts. Then on Sunday it’s a Hit Factory “Easter Special” with Lady Lloyd choosing pop & commercial chunks, while the hunks of Ku Bar boys will be swapping flags for ears & tails (of the bunny variety), serving up free chocolate shots (yum, yum). With Friday’s also proving popular, go to http://ku-bar.co.uk for more info.
Right and onwards to Vauxhall which is a hive of activity right across the weekend, The Orange Group surely to dominate proceedings from Friday through Monday with no less than 8 separate stunning events to tempt you in, two that look like being the real hits of this long weekend, so much so that we are devoting two separate Extra Bites posts to As One & Orange “Ascension”, which take place on Sat (23rd) & Mon (25th) respectively. As for the rest, well while their weekend started early yesterday with first Revolver at Area & then Gravity at Fire, it’s Onyx that really gets things going tonight (Fri 22nd Apr) at Area, with superstar guest P.A. Peyton, like us, fresh from his exploits at Delice Dream in Barcelona and sure to be as much as a hit here in London with his brand new Spanish smash which we were lucky to get a sneak preview of at Delice. With D.J.’s on duty including Lee Harris, Jc Christopher, Ariel & Hifi Sean, the special LED Crucifix tops off this terrific turn, neatly followed by A:M at Fire. The second slice of The Orange weekend includes a double doze of Later on Sunday & Monday, while Beyond is sure to attract one of the biggest crowds of the year with all the usual incredible ingredients that make this one of the most popular clubs we know. Then rounding off this incredible package of parties is Booster, which celebrates its 1st birthday this coming Monday (25th Apr) with Miss Crazy D, Ferno & Sharon O Love on the decks, plus plenty of special surprises & give-aways. More details of all these events can be found by going to http://fireclub.co.uk/gayparties.
Now to our selection Short Shouts, first being the return of Gay City Rollers this Sunday (24th Apr) for their “Royal Wedding Special”, with special guest Michael Farley from Starlight Express on hand to provide coaching for the less adept skaters (like us!) With The Very Miss Dusty O & Stewart Who providing the 70’s, 80’s & 90’s pop-tastic tunes to spin around the rink to, more fun simply cannot be had anywhere else (just see our review of GCR’s return at http://discomatt.com/web/2011/04/reviews-hot-pants-take-a-hit-gay-city-rollers-sunday-10th-april/) with more details of this entertaining event available at http://alexerfan.com.
Next up is Barcode Vauxhall, soon to be THE Barcode of London as their Soho sister waves farewell to the scene next weekend. As for this south of the river hotspot, this weekend looks like being a busy one, tonight seeing storming Swede Mattias Dabo perform an extended set in the club bar, while up front a selection of guest D.J.’s take their turn with the tunes. Then our man from Malmo returns for another stint, mixing it up with Marco Gee, Andrei Stan, Paul Coals & Mario Uleri. Then on Sunday its new night “United” which sees the first of many collaborations with The Orange Grp, this one a pre-party for Ascension, a link up with Booster & another Music Is The Answer session, all rolled in with Barcode, so one not to be missed. For further details of the goings on at Barcode go to http://bar-code.co.uk.
Our final short shout goes to The Eagle which crowns its weekend with the opening of their extensive beer garden, so a space to be a sure-fire hit with the forecast hot weather, while the action inside will also raise the temperatures, Tonker tonight (Fri 22nd) holding their “Big Bear Easter Bash” with special NYC guest D.J. Malcolm Jackson joining Tonker’s Tim Jones. Then on Saturday Luke Howard spearheads the sound spinning while the P.A. performance comes from vocalist Lee Thomas, while Sunday’s just wouldn’t be the same with the Horse Meat Disco team shenanigans, Jim Stanton, James Hillier & Severino spinning the super & hip hop house hits, making this a mash-up not to be missed. With a weeklong list of events go check out all the details at http://eaglelondon.com.
So, now it’s time to take a walk on the alternative side out our Best Bite has to go to Circus which returns this Sunday (24th Apr) for an event of biblical proportions as “Religion” takes centre stage at Centrepoint, well Paramount 31 floors up to be precise, Jodie Harsh’s colourful creation sure to attract an excitingly eclectic crowd of cavorters like no other. And as Miss Harsh quite rightly say’s “…Jesus, Mary & Joseph, it’s a good thing Monday is a Bank Holiday…” as after sampling the stunning & spectacular sounds from special guest D.J. French-Soler, who joins Jodie, Shoreditch son Kris Di Angelis & Joshyou Are on the decks, along with another way-out & whacky show from none other than Scottee, who will be lying in state for the entirety of the evening while partner in wackiness Angel Rose will be putting the fun into this farfetched funeral. With hosts, the decadent Daniel Lismore, Alexis Knox, La Pequena & Medusa, all running the floor, while down 31 on terra firmer Laurent Chaumet will make sure entry to Circus runs smoothly, events don’t get any more alternative & debaucherous than this, more details on Circus available at http://thisiscircus.com.
Now to two short shouts and first goes to East Bloc, the Shoreditch spot that is really stealing the out east show at the mo, tonight (Fri 22nd Apr) seeing the usual “Disco Fag Bar” going up against “Gossip” with a D.J. jam that includes Jerry Bouthier, John Sizzle, Princess Julia & Holestar, while “The Face” is the face of East Bloc’s Saturday, special guest Kevin Rowland of Dexy’s Midnight Runners hitting the decks. Plus with Sunday seeing new night “Vagabond” roll into town, more details of this happening hit of a hotspot can be found by going to http://eastbloc.co.uk.
Our other Short Shout goes to The Dalston Superstore (DSS) up in, well yes, Dalston, their usual jam packed weekends being no different this one, tonight (Fri 22nd Apr) seeing alternative night “Boy Dem” steer you into Saturday with Erol Sabadosh joined on the turntables by E-Man & Kusa Kubi, while on Saturday (23rd) “Hot Boy Dancing Spot” definitely fills the DSS spot with The Lovely Jonjo, Rory Phillips & Nadia Ksaiba spinning the sounds. Then, to round of their weekend, the fabulous “Dick & Fanny” sees DSS boys Dan Beaumont & Rokk D.J. mastermind the music with, we are told, a surprise guest!. With much more happening across the week & month, catch more details on DSS at http://dalstonsuperstore.com.
Now, just some quick news about Barcode Soho which closes its doors next weekend, the original news being that it was being turned into a restaurant. However, our latest insider story is that it will be retained as a bar and not just any old bar, but a gay one! So, with “Circa Soho” set to take the scene by storm, watch this space for details on the launch coming v soon.
Right, we are just about done in this shortened Best Bites & Short Shouts recommends report, although hope to be back to full strength by next week. In the meantime, why not check out what & where is hot this Easter weekend, well in the SeenQueen stakes at least, by checking out London’s clubbing bible choices for this weekend, a mixture of music, clubs & scene events which they have, “…filtered, picked & streamlined…” in a special post available at http://seenqueen.com/updates, while there is plenty more to see on their superb site, so well worth a visit.
So, that’s it for us, although our weekend starts right here with a trip into town tonight for a date of delectable dancing to the funk-tastic tunes of Brent Nicholls at Rupert Street, while on Saturday it’s As One, then Beyond on Sunday, Gay City Rollers after that, a “Blast Off” at SuperMartXe on Sunday night, Orange “Ascension” on Monday morning & finally Booster’s birthday on Monday night. So, if you see us out come say hi, but whatever you do, have an eggstatic Easter weekend and as we always say…..”Go There! Be There! (DISCO MATT)
